I had a couple of 30 litre stainless steel kegs in the shed and decided to turn them into fermenters.
I converted it to corny so I can get my hand in easily to clean it.
I also had to cut the clamping arms on the corny lid down a bit so it would close.
I put two litres of 7-up, sealed it and gave it a good shake... air tight.
I am thinking of getting one of the 15" bung and thermowells to drill in the top.

Any one got one of them ? I believe you can get a bung and stc probe in it. Can you post up a pick here if you have one, thanks.
Some pics..
I attempted this a couple of years back and even bought the lids with the holes from the states, it wasn't worth the aggro in the end as the kegs I had had a lip on the top and I had a mare trying to get a proper seal.
I made a lid out of Perspex in the end sitting on a siliconed down silicone tube.
I had a bunge cord holding it down and j fermented a few 45 litre ciders in it, heavy fecker though.
Shanna also did a good one if memory serves?
Having said that I just helped a prominent NHC brewer in south Dublin drill his 30l for thermowells and taps in the bottom and he just uses a straight lid with a bung sitting on a large rubber washer and swears by them.
When it comes to fermenting in odd things cornies and kegs are right up there for me. I've tried them and it was fun but I'll be sticking to my glass or new love SS Conicals even though they are ker ching
Anyways have a look in search engine under keg fermenters and something will show up and you will see all our hit miss or maybes
Nice Job
I made a stencil from a corny got a good cut with a dremmel type tool. It seals as easy as a corny.
I am going to buy the bung thermowell and stick it in the corny lid.
I am debating putting a sample tap in. If I do I will put an ss brew tech tap in, it has a rotating racking arm.
I will get a brew on next week and take it for a spin.
CH I saw the pics of your conical they look to be a great job.

I think the right kegs helps a lot the one I tried with the raised hip coming near the neck was a nightmare.
I have a dremel and a grinder, I found dremel useless on kegs too much work for them.
I've another idea for you, you can buy lids of Ali with corny posts in them already that way you could vent for fermentation with a disconnect and a bit of tubing and pressurise for carbonation, you just need a drain in the bottom for the trub or as you say a tap off the floor.

I ended out filling the hole

with one of these and just use it as a standard lid now

I like the sound of that :)
