Title: Added aroma hops too early- any way back?
Post by: FlimFlamFlo on July 31, 2016, 02:48:59 PM
Hi there,

Boil is underway (someone's watching it for me as I type :-)) and I just realised I made my 40m hop addition at 20 mins...The next additon was to be at flameout. Is there any point in adding for aroma at 20 mins - in addition to the 0 addition I'd planned or should I just roll with it?

Also - the Irish moss went in at 20m too - would doing that again be all right? I'm guessing any protein grabbing at 20mins would be long broken by the end of the boil?

Any advice appreciated.
:-)

Roll with it. The hop additions will just be different to what you planned but not bad or wrong. The Irish Moss is also fine.

Probably too late now but I would have upped my 0 min addition to make up for the aroma you will losing from not doing the 20 minute addition. Also likely that you'll end up with more IBUs than you planned for by throwing in your 20 min addition at 40 min.

Any thoughts on dry hopping it for a little extra aroma now? It's at 1011 from og of 1052 so around about at target fg now...

It's a SMASH - just pale ale malt and Amarillo - 28g at 60, 21g at 40 (the mistake bit in this instance) and 21g at flameout. I've brewed it before, it's a nice, balanced beer (imo anyway).

Can't decide on the dry hops though...

Why not lash in about 3 Oz of Amarillo for 4 days. Wil give you a nice big aroma!

85g is quite a bit to dry hop with 21g at flameout. Taste it when transferring and decide. You probably don't need to go more than 40g

Depends on your own taste I suppose. Personally I have added way more at flame out and at dry hop and have mostly found the more the merrier. Also I think Amarillo allows for generous amounts of dry hopping as it's not too grassy.
