As I suspected :(.
Any more different to our Nationals - higher entry fee to cover more glossy marketing?
Kind of surprised McGargles IPA didn't rate higher.
Francis big banging IPA is a beast of a beer
It surely is. It's so good I really don't give a sh!t if the marketing is cheesy and the producers are more crafty than craft.
I believe that former Molson Coors folks were heavily involved in getting Rye River up and running.
What hate?
I already said I was surprised FBB IPA didn't fare better as it's as good an IPA as I've seen from an Irish brewery to date - and much better value than anything remotely comparable as well, I might add.
The RRBC's founders held senior roles in MC and their board chairman was "Managing Director of a number of leading drinks brands in Ireland, such as Bulmers, Tennent's, Stella Artois, Becks" for 10 years. It's not credible to dismiss that kind of experience as being somehow irrelevant to their new venture.
In fact, I think it's brilliant that these guys, with all their experience in the drinks industry, and their ability to get product into the likes of Dunnes and Lidl think it worth their while to produce a proper west coast IPA given that their portfolio of brands includes the likes of San Miguel and Bavaria.
I think they copped that there is a customer for each type of beer around every corner.
What type of customer buys that red ale :P
I have great respect for those lads. They're running a craft brewery like a macro business and have 24/7 production to get the most out of their investment. Combined that with clever marketing and hiring the right people is a recipe for great beer for the masses.
It's laughable to refer to them as a craft brewery when they brew San Miguel + Bavaria and produce supermarket brands
They don't brew those. They just distribute them.

They're almost like 2 breweries. On one hand they have Alex and his team producing the likes of Francis Big Bangin' and a host of other really interesting and quality specials that appear at festivals and then you have the rest of the McGargles and Tesco beers which are pretty average, bordering on bad. As a business model it clearly works though.
The Dunnes brand beers are very good (Crafter range or something?) in particular the kolsch

Clever? Are we talking about McGargles here?? ???

Well, it doesn't work for me either, but I see loads of people walking out of SuperValu with bottles of McGargles at the weekend, so it's working for them. I've seen more than a fair share of other craft beers with a layer of dust on them, even though they are great beers.
Anyway, don't want to derail this into another Rye River pro/con thread. Good to see so many Irish breweries getting awards.
