Welcome Gerry. We've a small but growing group in Derry now. Next meetup will probably be in a fortnight or so.  :)

What sort of setup have you?

Are you all using grain, partial or extract.Im asking this as I bought a bag of Minch pale malt when I was up in Mount melkick and I have started experimenting with it.Trying SMaSH and maybe with herbs and spices without the hops.

Cheers Gerry.

Mostly all grain.

What herbs and spices are you going for?

At the moment I have a test batch using Rowan berry without hop additions to see how the tartness attributes to the ale.Toying a the moment to get the feel of things and I know Rowan is a fruit but has been used before.Quite like the idea of something different.

No neither have I.Test batch with 1kg Minch malt and another 500g which I roasted although the grains had been crushed.200g Rowan berry soaked for an hour in 1.5 litres of boiling water adding the juice to the wort then adding the berries at 60,30 and 15 with 10 grams of bubblewrack seaweed.

Out of curiosity is there anyone using carrageenan for clearing in your wort?

I always use half a tablet of Whirlfloc, which is a mix of Irish moss and carrageenan.

I've added the seaweed as above which is also an edible seaweed with the same characteristics as carrageenan.Bottled on Saturday morning cleat on Tuesday. Can be picked from the beach, cleaned, sundried, put through the blender or finely chopped and added to last 10 mins of boil.

Bladderwrack contains air in those bubbles, did you never pop them in Lahinch as a kid, goes rock hard dry
Have to do a big myrtle carrageenan brew one day

That's what help the plant rise and fall with the tide. Fucus vesiculosus beloved of 6th year biology students everywhere (including this one back in time). Can have high levels of iodine & potassium in it so I would use it sparingly from a taste point of view. It can also pickup marine pollution especially sewage so I would be judicious in where you get it.

Would be interested to try bog myrtle myself, but not sure how to go about getting it.  Can anyone just dander into a bog and starting lifting the plants there?
It's for sale online from this crowd in Scotland (http://www.bogmyrtle.com/), but you're taking €300 a kilo, some price!

What's wrong with the S33? If you transferred to a second fv there will still be plenty of yeast in there to ferment it.

Lifted the lid for a look and seems inactive although there is a ring of krauzen but maybe that's just me.Never seen a bubble in airlock on both occasions using this yeast.

I'd be inclined to leave it and see how it gets on. Pitching the 2nd yeast would be fine as well though, shouldn't cause any major issues.

The airlock might not bubble if the lid isn't securely closed either and CO2 is escaping that way.

It's not a very detailed map, but it's a start, I suppose.  Could take a run down next week maybe.

I moved it to a separate fv and pitched the other yeast as there was 2 small slices where the bung fits.Fixed now with an icing nozzle and blow torch.Cheers for the advice and shall let you know how it goes.By the way I bottled the Rowan berry and is tart without hops and pitched with bread yeast to see how beer may have tasted some while ago.Shall let it sit for a bit.

Was pointed to an area where the myrtle might grow!?! It needs acid wet ground- raised bog is it's ideal!!!!!
I had a couple of poor fermentation a with s33 recently they were both purchases out or near end of dates from homebrew.ie.
They probably needed A good starter!!!!!?

Funny mine were out of date since the end of February and I picked them up whilst at their shop. They were both pitched dry.Read too many bad stories online and would think twice about using it again although it's my own fault for not making a starter.
