To be technical it's a Masskrug.

Stein is not an expression used very often in German to describe a litre glass.

It's one of those myths in English perpetuated primarily by the yanks these days.

I remember first going to Germany and talking of steins of beer only to be looked at funny, it took them a little while to realise that we were discussing litre glasses.
There is a form made out of ceramic and that could possibly be called a stein, but it's very specific and even with the fancy lidded ones they would still talk of a Masskrug.
