Well,
Its that time of the year again, when the hops are ready for harvesting.
The once a year opportunity to brew with wet hops.
I have plenty of free fresh hops for your next brew, if you're interested in picking them - mostly Fuggles and Cascade.
We usually have a bit of a get-together, where activities generally revolve around -
1) picking hops for your next brew,
2) discuss brews, growing/processing hops, and any other shite.
3) sample a home brew or three
4) If you want to chip in ~€10 euros, I'll get some supplies and we can cook up a storm on the bbq.
At the moment its looking like 24th or 25th September.
We had a great afternoon the last few years.
cheers
Brett
Hi Brett
Count me in.
Eoin
Everything is on that weekend, dammit!
This sounds great, might have something else on the Saturday evening but will try to make it!
Hi Brett,
absolutely count me in. I've missed the all the previous Harvest Days but I'm looking good for this one.

Hi Brett would absolutely love to be there, as I am interested in growing hops next year and would be very curious about your setup. Unfortunately I can't make it so hope you all have a good time.
We'll, I'm almost recovered from the Euro BBQ championships in Germany on the weekend,
it looks like we have a quorum,
the hops are still good, but the sooner the better,
the weather forecast is shite.
Looks like we are good to go this weekend. The hops and BBQ are under cover so a bit of drizzle won't harm us. The weather looks a bit better on Saturday than Sunday so I think Saturday would be better.
Time: say 1pm

You could call in some other day that suits. I'll PM you.
This time of year is the best to see how the vines grow so you can plan a suitable location and climbing frame. Then PM me next feb/march if you want some fuggles or cascade. I also have some Kent Goldings but it doesn't perform as well in this climate.
Thanks a million for the invite Brett, I can't 100% commit right now but will do my best to get there.

Hope you have a good day Brett, won't be able to make as I will be attending to my own hops this weekend. My son is still talking about the time I went there, he loved the garden and the toys :)

Best of luck Brett - Hope the Weather is good for you!
Sunday works better for a few people and today's forecast is looking drier on Sunday, so Sunday it is - definitely.
Location : Birdhill
Date : Sunday 25th Sept
Time : 1pm
Usual format;
1pm Setting up.
2pm Picking hops.
6pm BBQ (€10 per head)
7pm weigh and distribute hops.
Bring oldish clothes with long sleeves, as vines can scratch a little.
As usual, please PM me your email address as I don't fancy posting my details on the forum.
Would like to join as well :-[ but have to mind kids ...
Would have loved to be there as well but away, maybe next year 😀

What a day :) big thanks to Brett :) and all Lads.... had a great time :) kids happy as well :) hope to see you lads soon again :)
Cheers Brett, that was a great day out picking hops, drinking beers, having a laugh and a great BBQ - thanks again for having us and I'm looking forward to putting the hops to use.
Thanks to all for making it a great get together.
As usual, we spent an hour chatting before we even saw a hop.
Unfortunately, the outdoor crop is past its viability, so we'll only get half the haul today. But the sun made a surprise appearance for the entire afternoon, and we're rearing to go.
Here we are sizing up the job.

Space was a little tight. For the first while we were literally standing in amongst the cascading vines. No better place to get smothered in the aroma.

This is the first year we managed to complete the pick before dark, so we were able to feed the masses before starvation completely kicked in.

Now, for one week of the year, we get to walk around the house with the headphones on, enjoying the lovely aroma of drying hops. Unfortunately, any attempt to remove the headphones, results in hearing the rest of the family constantly whinging about the stench throughout the house.
Cheers
