Title: Recos for CIP ball
Post by: Pheeel on September 13, 2016, 10:44:25 AM
Does anyone have any recos for CIP balls? I want to use one to clean kegs. It doesn't need to be shiny :)

Recos?

You can find video where I compared my balls in equipment section(herms return). One was spinning, one was full of holes. Whayhaaay

Yes the latter. Just wondering which ones folks have bought and had good experience with!

Lets get this thread back on the rails.

Before you buy a ball you need to know your pump capacity!

CIP is not just about spraying the solution over the containers surfaces. Some degree of physical water pressure is required to dive the ball and also to pressure jet bits of crud.

Then it gets complicated:

High Pressure pump, High delivery and too many big holes - poor performance.

What pump are you using?

And don't say chhugger!

Its reall about getting these two correct. A lot of trial and error or a good recomendation as the OP was about.

Did I say that the ball needs to spin really freely (i.e. be well made!)

Thanks Will. It's a pond pump that runs at 1400L per hour. BTW I checked, no lead :)

Chugger Pumping that, full throttle no good for spinning one tbh, HopBomb got the spinning one for Galway Bay.

I'm using pressure washer as skibeagle recommended without CIP head now and its the DB's.

Regime is now cold rinse to get the dregs out, them pbw mix in hot, lid on pressurised and drain off through a tap into bucket to see what comes out then powerwash spray to get real crud out then power washer in.
Power washer sitting directly over the tops of the posts and it blasts all the crap off the poppets.
Tip everything out and then starsan as above

Every second use of the corny gets the full strip otherwise its a flush with hot pbw and starsan.
Only down side is I also end out covered in PBW and SS

If you have a pond pump just use pbw and stick a copper pipe on it with some holes and a blank at the top with some more holes.
I did one of those years ago. They look pretty but in my experience don't beat a blast from a karcher with the karcher spinning head which to me strips skin.

I sourced the exact same pump the use in the marks carboy washer, http://www.petrolscooter.co.uk/water-pump-350-3500-lph-1-83m-4m-cable-uk-eu-plug-garden-pond-water-feature.html (the 3500lph one), next is to get a few fittings and some pipe and then I should have a washer build.

I think the other reason I never stuck with it was that for the carboys even leaving it for 30 mins running I could never really get rid of the krausen line with the same performance as my lazy (patent pending) roll soak on its side in OXY :-\

Probably a vid here somewhere...   edit  pre vid just pics I'm afraid, I knew it was the profs fault I bought that thing more "gadget goading"

Even Barry (Bazza) said "Bang! and the stain is gone" ;D

Let us know how you get on.

Well I did tell the wife we needed a pressure washer for the garden... Okay I'll go with the pipe for now. I'm only using it for keg cleaning so less crud than a carboy

Blew the dust off this again as I have a lot of brewing tomorrow and wanted to give them a rinse from storage.

It's just a simple cheap garden pond pump from eBay with a keg spear, copper pipe would have done either.
Warm water and w5

A good rinse of the pump afterwards as residual cleaning solution will attack the plastic.

I'm still not convinced it would lift krausen off sides vs a soak but will give it a go in a couple of weeks

activates just above 60, not boiling for carboys  ;)

this is the pump or one like it 1500L/h
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/300-600-1000-1500-2500LPH-Submersible-Water-Fountain-Pump-for-Fish-Tank-Pond-HOT-/381505893889?var=&hash=item58d385f601:m:mKBtuJhnKQ_h72TA4LAuHqA

I will say that I needed to centre on the jug to ensure a clean stream down the side of the carboy, that could be tricky on a keg and you'd probably need to twist 180 degrees halfway through to ensure it was cleaning.
