POC The Homebrew Centre
5% discount for NHC members
The Homebrew Centre has been set up to supply top quality materials and equipment for the homebrewing community. We endeavour to stock everything and anything that homebrewers need. As beer, wine and cider makers for many years we have the knowledge and experience that you can rely on.
Just to let you know about the opening of Dublin's newest homebrew shop. Saturday 15th October sees the doors open at 12 noon. Hambleton Bard will be there with special offers, lots and lots of products (about 1,000 different lines), and a demo brew on the Bulldog Brewer. We have five of them in stock; best of all, they and everything else will be at a 15% discount for the day.
To find us - get to the entrance to the Guinness Storehouse, turn 90 degrees anti-clockwise, and the shop is 30 metres smack bang in front of you. Free parking in front of the shop.
See you on Saturday!
Your website isn't working for me :(
Great news. A shop handy to Kildare and south Dublin..
Would be pretty sweet if there was a place in Dublin you could spin round to and pick up a vial or smackpack of liquid yeast on a whim
Best of luck with the venture Kevin! I'm sure I'll be in at some point.
Well done. Best of luck with it :)
Best of luck Kevin. I shall drop in soon.
Best of luck with the new venture :)
Best of luck Kevin.
Best of luck.
Are you exclusive irish agents of Hamilton Bard?
Well Done Kevin, will call in at some point
I work near there very handy. People always asking in work how to get into home brewing so hopefully I can point them ur direction. Best of luck.
Best of luck with it.
Thanks for all the encouraging words guys. The website isn't working yet (I haven't finished it!), but the address is correct.
@ Simon_ The plan is to have liquid yeast in stock - I'm hopefully starting on Saturday with White Labs WLP001, WLP002 and WLP004.
@ DCBrewing No, I'm not Hambleton Bard's exclusive Irish agent. I think my main supplier, Homebrew West is. It's coincidental that they happen to be in Ireland on 15th, so it's been organized that they will be in the shop.
Good luck with it. Looking forward to seeing what you've got to offer.
All the best,
Mick
Congrats Kevin and best of luck.
This is great news Kevin, wishing you the very best of luck with the new venture!!!
Will certainly be dropping in next Saturday to pick up some WL002 and a few other bits and pieces.
Good luck!
Great news Kevin. Good luck with the venture.
OK, starting with a disappointment. I won't have any liquid yeast until probably Saturday 22nd :-[ . And I may not have any hops until then either.
Oh well, only one way to go from here - onwards and upwards!

Looks good, only suggestion I'd make would be to open later and close later. 5pm doesn't give people finishing work much lee-way to call in and browse.
In fact I don't get why a lot of specialist shops don't change their hours to 1pm-8pm to catch lunch and after-work trade, and take their own break in the mid-afternoon lull.
Probably because they have a life outside of commercial ventures! 8PM! Maybe one night every fortnight or month for beer tasting or educational evening etc?
Fair enough comment CH, but Mottley opens late every Thursday and Friday, and opens Saturday too - business isn't like the old days any more.
I know I, and many like me, would never be able to make it to town 9-5 Mon-Fri, but I can -and do- make it to Ian's shop on Thursday, Friday or even Saturday morning pre-Brew to get items or ingredients I may need.
Broken Hydrometer on a Saturday? No bother, head over to Mottley! Need a couple hundred grams of some speciality malt for a last minute brew? Ah - Mottley is open!
That kind of thing.
Not to sound like a prick, but "having a life" is not possible when trying to get a business off the ground - you have to give your customers what they need, not tell them what they want - or else you'll find out very quickly that they aren't actually your customers, they are the competitions customers.
And friendly and all as the Brewing community is, those businesses -are- in direct competition with each other.
Unless it's a labour of love, of course.
Yeah even staying open til 6 a few days a week would enable alot more of the 9-5 people to drop in. And I'd say the majority of Dublin brewers are 9 to fivers
Yeah, I'm with beechlawn on this. The opening hours advertised will completely exclude nearly everyone working normal business hours. Defo at least one day a week could be a later opening and closing so people could plan.
Tbh I never have any requirement for last minute stuff as all my brews are planned well in advance and never really have a need to nip down anywhere for anything, I was caught short once and a call out on the local whats ap group sorted me out.
Most of my buying is done between the hours of 10 and midnight all online :) and to me that's where a huge part of the business is. I know its not practical to pay €5 delivery charge for a €1's worth of grain
Surely the simpler answer than expect vendors to open all hours for is to ask a pal in your local club using whats ap who may be going down at lunch time to pick up what you need and collect it from them on the way home?
I do that for GCB'ers at the various vendors all the time.
I commend Ian for opening late but that's his personal choice.
My point is sitting in a shop until 8 every night with only a couple of customers some nights and getting home at 9 on Winter evenings can't be fun if you have family and I wouldn't ask anybody to do that,
As I said above make an arrangement for one late night every couple of weeks, if there is a demand for it then and it was profitable then I'm sure it would be extended.
I think a family trip to the zoo must be in order soon. :)
Yeah looking for the homebrew shop said it was round here somewhere

Well im sure kevin is used to working until 10pm anyway with working in sweeneys. It would be crazy to think an off license would open and only work 9-5. Id say 90% of their business is outside these hours. If you're determinedfor a business to suceed then you should be putting in ridiculous hours until you can afford to hire extra staff. No one said he should open late every day. 1 or two nights a weel and sure take a quiet Monday or Tuesday completely off wouldn't be a bad idea.
May I suggest a 24hr shop. Just to be sure...... :P :P
Will you be an agent for AJs Co2? WOuld be very handy for exchanges
Things I would most like to have from a home brew shop in Dublin. Do what you like with this info. :D
1) Good selection of vacuum sealed and cold stored hop pellets
2) Decent enough selection of liquid yeast (doesn't have to be over the top with unusual stains)
3) Considerable selection of fresh grain and speciality malts
4) Easy to use online shop with next day delivery
I think this list would satisfy many AG brewers in Dublin and would attract business. I usually brew on my days off from work so popping in during normal hours would generally suit me, but Saturday opening would be handy too.

Uhh does that mean I'd have to go to the shop? Can he not just sit in a van outside my house with everything until I feel like brewing?
Jaysis CH, you're some man for misquoting, taking things out of context and generally twisting things.
Fair play.
Nobody here mentioned opening late EVERY night, but go on ahead and put words in people's posts. That's constructive.
Double Jaysus an I was feeling sorry for you on that other thread and about to sort you out with a 004 solution

I haven't quoted anybody.
Your welcome.
:'(
In the matter of beechlawn v CH, I find the defendant..... GUILTY
And the horse you rode in on Judge Judy
Lads can you keep it on track for Kevin who is starting a new business?

Another suggestion would be to link your your stock to the website for grain/hops so people can check it before calling in.
Thanks for all your comments - some food for thought! The main reason I'm closing at five on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is that I'm keeping working part-time in the off-licence to provide cash flow for myself, and I start evenings there at 5.30. If there is demand for later opening on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, or earlier opening on Saturdays, then I will do it. Mondays will be my day off.
@ Johnny cheech
1) Good selection of vacuum sealed and cold stored hop pellets - this will happen, but not until around Saturday 22nd
2) Decent enough selection of liquid yeast (doesn't have to be over the top with unusual stains) - again, Saturday 22nd ish
3) Considerable selection of fresh grain and speciality malts - won't happen before Christmas
4) Easy to use online shop with next day delivery - not sure about whether or not to go the online route
Just an idea: do you think you could partner up with deliveroo for on the spot deliveries? Probably no but maybe something to look into
Quote from: Dunkel on October 12, 2016, 09:41:52 PM
4) Easy to use online shop with next day delivery - not sure about whether or not to go the online route
Why not?
Personally I think not to go online in this day and age would be extremely risky. If I was making that list again in your shoes I would put the online aspect very near the top. You just have to look at the other successful HB shops, they're all online. I generally only order from HBC these days, along with many other Jackeens i know. Why? Not because they're close by, but because they have a very good selection of goods and generally provide next day delivery. It's easier for people to make an order online whilst in their sitting room, on the jax with their phone or on the way to work than to make a trip to a HB shop. Delivery companies like DPD now notify you when they will deliver to your chosen delivery address within the hour, and this only costs 4-5 euro for the customer.
BTW I'm not criticising your choices here, just offering my advice. It's your business and your risk, only my opinion. When I way up the cost and convenience of ordering online against making a trip to the HB shop there is only one winner. I'm sure there's many HBers out there that like making the trip to the HB shop but I'm also very sure that there's as many, if not more, that don't have the time these days.
Online all the way, then your nationwide 24/7
Yeah just my 2 cents, but online seems the only way to go these days to me. It's great having a bricks and mortar presence, but nothing beats the convenience of having what I buy delivered to my door. Can't remember the last time I went into any store to get something bar groceries...
Regardless the best of luck and will try to call in at some point to show support for another local business.
Always good to see Homebrew supplies more available in any capacity!
I'm sure you've got your own plan in mind both for now & down the line! I'll be dropping in sooner or later too check it out!

Best of luck Kevin. I definitely would be calling in if I was still in Dublin. Will try to get a run out next time I'm down.
Have you a Twitter/Facebook page we can throw on the NHC pages as well?
@ Thomas,
Not yet, but will be coming :)
Have you got hops in yet? I'll be around the area at the weekend but don't really need anything except some EKG and some Starsan.
Firstly, to Qs - I STILL don't know yet - I'm hoping to have hops (and liquid yeast!) in for Friday/Saturday, but am waiting on delivery. I have Starsan (118 ml) on the shelves.
Busy day last Saturday - all Bulldog Brewers sold. Next batch will be in the country about the last week in November; come in store and pay a 50 euro deposit to reserve one and I'll look after you - I'm not sure of the final price, but it will be less than advertised. :)
I'm going to (for the moment anyway) run specials on a Saturday; so this coming Saturday 22nd it'll be the turn of beer kits and ingredients (e.g. extract, hops (if I have any ;) ), yeast, etc.
Just come in and see what you can save! ;D
Any update on when the website will be up?
Only got up to Dublin on Sun/Mon so missed the opening & really could have used some beer -got dragged around Ikea for four hours :(
Maybe better that you post what you have like the other shops do so that we can come cash in hand, btw do you take credit cards

?
The website IS coming, but progress is painfully slow. In the meantime, there's literally too many stock items to post what I have. Still no hops or liquid yeast - a delivery yesterday didn't turn up.
On the bright side, I do take credit cards!
Just to let you know that I'll be doing specials on all wine kits this coming weekend - perfect timing for the Bank Holiday weekend :) You'll have to come into the shop to find out how special!

If you could put up a general list of malts/brands you have it could help people thinking about heading into town to you especially with malts needed to finish a recipe etc.
Very best of luck with it, lots of patience required
Hooray! Website now online (though it's more like a prototype at the moment. Email address is Sales@thehomebrewcentre.ie; and phone is 086 0447641. Getting there slowly ;)
Mods: would you please amend the original post to show this new info. Thanks.
This weekend in-store I'm running specials on anything cider related (not you CH). And yes, I do have cider yeast in stock (what's the betting someone comes in and buys it all now ??? ).
Best of luck with the new venture ;D One of these days someone will open up down south for us poor southerners :P
will pop in for some yeast saturday
As the new batch of Bulldog Brewers are arriving in the country imminently (if that's a word), I hope to have a few of them in the middle of next week. To celebrate this, I'll be doing a demo brew on the model I have this coming Saturday 19th. Starting at 11 am. I'll also be taking deposits for the new version 2 - ask in store and I'll give you a very special price ;)
Sure, as half the world seems to be doing Black Friday specials, I'll knock 10% off everything until close on Saturday. And I'm calling it Freaky Friday ;D
I doubt that this will be of interest to many of you (because if you're already on this forum, you know how to brew!), but I'll be running a free demo on Tuesday 13th December at 6pm on "How to brew in an apartment" - basically making a beer kit in the Cooper's half-size fermenter, and showing people how to bottle.
How does that work for then? Is it a half size kit?

Yep; it's a fairly new starter kit from Coopers - http://www.thehomebrewcentre.ie/coopers-diy-beer-craft-brew-kit-85-litre.html
Hopefully the plan is to get new people interested in making their own.
Christmas opening (or closing) hours; closing 5pm on Christmas Eve, and reopening on Tuesday 3rd January.
And a Happy Christmas to you all!
Kevin, Enjoy the break - you must be knackered after the last few months!
Just to let you know the shop will be closed Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th January - there's been a bereavement in the family and I have to go to England for a few days.
Reopens Tuesday 10th January.
My apologies for those who came to the shop on Thursday or Friday to find it closed. Due to unforseen circumstances (i.e spending two days in A&E), the shop was closed. And it will also be closed on Tuesday 17th January, as I will be in England for a funeral.
So I'm really sorry about this, but hopefully normal service will be resumed from Wednesday 18th onwards.
Kevin.
Hope you are ok Kevin, come off the bike?
To celebrate the fact that I'm starting to come into the 21st Century, and now have a Facebook page, I'm running a competition for a €100 voucher. Go on to Facebook and search for "The Homebrew Centre" ( I have no idea how to give you a direct link) You have to "like" and "share" (or something like that) to enter. Draw held on Saturday 11th March, in time for Paddy's Day.
Facebook whats that, oh yeah dancing cats, anything on twitter? :(
Well done on the FB side btw :D
Any liquid yeast on horizon?
On the horizon, but the ship is sailing very slowly. :-\
Its a sailing ship thats all that matters ;)

Drum, thank you for that - it was beyond my meagre techie knowledge!
Delighted to receive an order of stock - so now have back heatbelts, timers, StarSan, US05, etc. :)
At last! White Labs 001 California Ale and 002 English Ale liquid yeast in stock ;D
Please note that the shop is closed on St. Patrick's day - I'm drowning the shamrock with homebrew :) Open on Saturday. And lots of speciality grains now, as well as base malts.
I received an email and phone call from my financial backer yesterday, telling me they are "pulling the plug" on the shop and to close it down. I'm not sure of the exact date of closure, so if you need anything it's best to ring me on 086 0447641 to check. 10% off all remaining stock.
Thankyou for your business in the past,
Kevin.

Oh no!
oh no, I'm very sorry to hear that Kevin. Hope things work out with whatever you choose to do afterwards.
Thanks guys, life will go on :)
Sorry to hear that Kevin. I was going to pop up to you for a siphon on Saturday. Will you be open?
Very sorry to hear that Kevin.
Very sorry Kevin

Yes, I'll be open on Saturday. Probably the last day the shop will be operating.
C'est la vie.
That sucks mate. Best of luck in what ever venture you find yourself doing next.
Sorry to hear the bad news.
Do you have any heat pads in stock?
All the best,
Ian
Bad news man. At least you gave it a go. No regrets.
No, no heat pads.
List up the stuff you have Kevin.
Shame to see this happen, but if lads know whats there they might muck together to help shift your stock.
Sorry to hear it. Can't win 'em all, unfortunately :)
Hallelujah! After some negotiations with my financial backer and someone else, the Homebrew Centre will now remain open under new management - me! Unfortunately the new opening hours will be restricted at first - only Friday and Saturday from 12 until 5pm. Hope to expand these soon.

We're Reopenng. Yaaaaay!
Great news Kevin
Viking, Bestmalz and Colrado malts, both base grains and speciality malts now in stock. 10% off for the moment :)
Now, not a lot of people know this, but the Easter Bunny brings good things apart from eggs. Like stuff for wine and beer makers for instance. So he asked me to give all the winemakers 10% discount on anything wine related until Easter Saturday. And not forgetting the beerios ('cos he's good that way), an extra special deal on 25kg sacks of uncrushed base grain. A further 10% off the already best prices in Ireland. Plus a goody bag of Colorado crystal 20 EBC free.
What a nice rabbit!
Oh, and I forgot to say, I'll be ordering liquid yeast from Whitelabs. Any particular ones desired?
The Guinness Storehouse is closed today. But I'm not. So come in and get all the materials you need to make your own stout :P
At last the snail delivered, so essentials like hops and liquid yeast back in stock. And at 10% off for Brewcon weekend :)
Do you crush grain instore?
Yes.
Hi Kevin,
Are you open over the weekend? And do you have Citra and Amarillo hops in stock?
Hi Padraic,
Yes, I'm open on Saturday 12 to 5 pm (hence not at Brewcon :( ). And yes, I have both Citra and Amarillo in stock.
FREE packet of Turboklar with every Turbo yeast until I change my mind :P
10% off all Festival beer kits. And Bestmalz base malts (pale, wheat, pilsner) €20 for 25kg sack; Viking base malts €25 for 25kg sack.
Just decided to do a flash sale - 10% off EVERYTHING this weekend :)
Will this come off at checkout or is there a code?
Oops! Just saw this. I don't do online sales, so it's just in the shop.
Hi everybody,
Please note that the shop will be closed on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th July due to a procedure on my knee. So if you want to make beer or wine next weekend, you'll have to get your ingredients this weekend!
Open again on Friday 21st.
Kevin.
Hope all goes well for the knee (and the rest of your body)
Thanks Will!
After discussion with my backer/boss, the homebrew shop will be operating solely online as from next week. So tomorrow, Saturday 22nd will be the last day open as a physical shop. So come in and buy lots on your way to U2!
That's a shame - it was handy to pop down to for a bit of grain! Best of luck anyway,
Ian
