My wife's wants to get me a microscope for Christmas, she just don't know it yet😉. Any suggestions on what to get and where I need to direct her.
There's a joke to be made here somewhere...
:D t'is for yeast, honest.
You need to spend about 500 "HerselvesShekkles" for a decent scope.
Btw: just checked current exchange rate and €1 is about 1 HsS (as above)
Google Microscopes India for some 1/2 decent 'scopes.
Adverts.ie is always worth a look. They have some decent bargains in microscopes from time to time.
Don't forget to factor in a haemocytometer a decent one will cost you about a ton.I don't know how well the cheaper ones work out.

A wha?
A fancy slide which has microscopic lines cut in it like tiny graph paper. Haemocytometer because they use it to count blood cells, we use it to count live and dead yeast cells. You stain the yeast sample with methylene blue (available from fish pet shops) the dead cells turn blue and the live ones remain clear, or at least that's the concise description.

I seem to remember buying 3 and I certainly didn't pay €300!
I see some come with a one year guarantee (excluding breakage) - how on earth can a etched/graduated big microscope slide wear out?
I want to know what's he's counting

Keep us updated as I'm interested in this myself when spare cash is available.
I had a sample of yeast from my fastfermenter tested as above.... it was 5 weeks in the fridge. 50% dead so I reckon u loose 10% per week but I'd like to be able to check myself at home.
There's a really good app for counting cells available only for Apple devices. It's called HemocyTap. I had it before I changed to Android. I'll have to wait until they make an Android version.

Max mag is 600 and it looks like you have to change one of the objectives as there are only 4 on the turret!
Also digital mag is not really the best!
Celestron is a recognidsed make (mainly telescopes)
Not overly impressed.
How are you getting on with "hunt the yeasties" what mag do you find best for counting and health checking?
Did you get the USB camera working?
Working away, cannot get the camera to link with the PC :(, able to count cells but find that trying to use the two eyepieces awkward so closing one eye and peeking ;D. Also find the 20X not as clear as the 10X ocular.
After being fooked about by the Indians (p.s. john Wayne was right),I have bitten the bullet and bought these,

Don't ever buy from this crowd as they will take your money and lie through their teeth that they really did send it. Finally got my money back.
