Title: Perforated stainless steel sheet or stainless steel mesh for false bottom
Post by: wartotojas on November 11, 2016, 10:23:40 AM
Hi everybody,

For the last few months I am working on my project and trying to put all in one type brewing system just like Grainfather or The Bulldog Brewer. My idea was to use stainless steel mesh to act as false bottom in malt pipe, just like the one in picture. I know about the ebay seller "The Mesh Company" and they  do have specs and size I need and I did order from them twice now and never received the thing.

I know few places in UK could do custom size false bottom (I need aprox 46cm diameter) but for that size they are looking for 80 pounds or so plus shipping on top so a bit pricey.

If anyone knows any alternatives or any advice is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Folks her have messed around with ikea splash trays and lots of other stuff.
By the time you buy all the bits to mod you will end out at the same cost point and it's gonna look and perform like shit so I'd just be spending the money as it's probably the most important part of your brewery and can make or break your process

I have some stainless mess like this, that I had for a previous brewing set up, that I no longer use. I'll measure tonight and come back to you, but expect it's bigger than the required 46cm diameter that you mention.

Where are you based?

Thanks Taf. Based in co. Westmeath, could easily collect anywhere in Dublin area.

I'm based in Cork, but we can figure out how to get it to you once I check it is the right size. It was quite expensive, so will be looking to get something back for it.

the one on ebay I was going to get is about 20 quid for 500mm x 500mm sheet. I don't mind buying it of you for similar price.

Try Inoxia Ltd.  They're a uk company that sell stainless steel mesh but can also make whatever you want.  Heres a link to their ebay shop

A false bottom with slots is more efficient and apparently all pro set ups have that configuration.  With that in mind could you get a piece of stainless from a fabricator cut to size and then cut slots in it yourself with an angle grinder?

Your false bottom does not have to be the entire size as the base of your malt pipe.  I cut out a load of holes on the base of my pot with one in the centreand put a false bottom from AliExpress on top. You can them cheap enough delivered and some shops do custom sizes. This works perfectly, getting 80+ efficiency and no stuck mashes.

I have one 12" false bottom from aliexpress laying around from my previous projects. This would be just over 30cm diameter. I have always thought that open are will not be enough and was concerned on efficiency etc. Now this makes me wondering. Should I chance it with small false bottom I have already or should I get mesh/bigger bottom?

Try it, won't cost you anything and you can change it if doesn't work. I wouldn't cut the bottom like. the pic in your first post. Mine works perfectly, have a look at my build on the last page

Just measured and the piece I have is 60cm. Have a look at your other options, but you can have for €20 if still interested.

Is it 60x60cm? If so I will take it as my back up option

yes, 60cm. Do you want to see if anyone is going from Cork to Dublin, if you aren't in a bad hurry?
