Title: Pumps
Post by: Paul on November 07, 2012, 02:12:26 PM
I'm struggling making 10 gallon brews with my Hop and Grape brewery due to the weight of the boiler making it difficult to move when full.

Does anyone use pumps with the H&G brewery and if so what sort of setup do you have ?

Would these drill pumps be suitable? http://www.handyhardware.ie/cat/Water-Pumps/301/377

Thanks.  Looks good.  Did you go for the one with the screw on connections ?

Do you have the H&G boiler and if so did you change the tap on it to something that works better with the tubing ?

I bought SP20/20 with silicone pipes.
To get it working with tubing connected 1/2" NPT to 3/8" barbed to the valve in my HLT.
Using that pump to recirculate wort when chilling.

Cool.  Were you worried about the coloured tubing hiding dirt ?

Do you use screw on connections at both ends or a barb when connecting to the boiler/ mash tun taps ?

The tap on my boiler is really wide, certainly too big for the 7mm i.d. silicon tube with the pump.

How do you power the pump ?  It says 12 volt.

I use the silicone tubing and connectors that solar projects sells. I think I cut 2 m of tube for my pump. I wash the tubes out, soak them in starsan and start pumping just at the end of the boil to sanitize things. Haven't had any problems and I've been using them for over a year. I have a threaded barbed  fitting on my boiler tap that takes it and the other end pumps onto the wort chiller to whirlpool.

Also use the solar project pump, I did go for clear silicone just so I can see through it ::)

Great little pump

I also use one of these. Awesome pump for the price.

Where did you buy your taps ?  I'll need to replace my boiler tap.  Mash tun might be ok.

I use 1/2" ball valve with hoseloc tails on all my vessels, I then have hoseloc fittings on the tubing from the pump.
With this set up I can pump from any vessel to any other

How do you connect the 7mm silicone to a hoselock fitting ?  Are they not a lot wider ?

Sorry for all the questions!

I use 9mm silicone, bought it from these guys (http://www.labunlimited.com/search.asp?txtText=silicone+tubing&btnSubmit.x=0&btnSubmit.y=0).

It just streached over them.
I dont have a pic, but I'll see can I get one tomorrow

I've noticed that some of my cheaper hoseloc fittings ( like B&Q or Woodies at a 1/3 rd the price of the yellow expensive ones ) tend to get a bit "sticky" and need replacing

ps: Need to go SSS ( shinny stainless steel ) :-X

So I bought the solar project pump, tubing, connectors and 1/2 inch ball valve taps to upgrade my plastic taps.  But I stupidly didn't check the hole sizes already drilled in my hop and grape equipment.  The holes are all 25mm.  There's then some sort of reducing valve connecting to the larger tap thread allowing the 15mm copper hop filter or manifold to be attached.

Has anyone upgrade boiler taps to steel with 25mm holes ?  Is there some sort of connector I could use ?

Hi Jacob,

Was wonder whether the pump comes with a power supply to step down to the smaller voltage?
