Tube what amounts of malt are ye getting through in a year? Did anyone consider that malt is 400 euros/ ton? thats 40-50 cent a kilo in bulk. thats cheap to me. Has anyone thought of buying irish malt from minch and bagging ourselves? the same malt that Oharas is made with and guinness is made with is 50 cent a kilo and readily available up the road in athy. any ideas down this line?
I know I spoke to Minch. Minches barley supplier is a close friend/ client of mine. he grows barley in athy. And with the prices hes receiving from minch theres room for some of us to start malting or at least roasting ourselves as well.
Minch will only talk 5 tonnes, not interested in any less.
However 5 tonnes in 20kilo bags isnt really that much in a year, hence I was enquiring how much malt u think ye use in a year?
Its a shame with the best barley just up the road ( I can vouch for that because I use the barly straight from the field and roast myself) were importing at high prices from england or beyond. This is where a large group like the HBC can do very well potentially, why arnt we buyin 5 tonnes and roast, bag and distribute ourselves? Wheres Trouble/ Carrig/ FWell/ and all the others getting it from. In times as tough as it is now is there no way to use irish barley where someone can make a few bob.

Blunt and a couple of the other Cork lads have picked up bagged malt from the Cork Malting Company recently. I think the bags are supposed to be 10kg for €10, but the lads said that you usually get a bit more than that. I presume they are bagging manually, until the bagging line goes in, but I haven't been there in a while, so not sure. I think I have enough base malt left for one brew, so will be taking the trailer in there soon enough, so will report back then. I probably won't get much more than I need this time, as it seems you can buy it direct from the maltings at close to the price I would be offering if for, but I may have a sack or two spare depening on how much ends up in the trailer. I am excited to getting pale malt this time rather than the lager, as the taste is superior in my opinion.
nice to see that at least some are using Irish malt and as taf says its gud/ superior!
Tube...... I roast my own barley straight from the field, as I said in a previous post a good friend/ client grows for minch maltings. Its just a little extra touch to use fresh raw barley only stick it an oven and to me its the same comparison as a cup of fresh ground brewed coffee versus tesco's instant rubbish. The roasting sends a toast aroma all over the house and it can be picked up in the finished beer (ales and stouts)
After malting they do tests every time (obviously) The sample they take for testing is way more than they need for testing and this is what they're now bagging in the 10kg bags, thats what I was told on the tour I recently took anyhoo
Went to the irish malting company on Friday and got some pale malt and lager malt. Was talking to Chris about the bagging line and he couldn't say if or when it would be up and running.Got a spare 10kg bag of pale malt if any one is interested €10.
I do some work for breweries and the distilleries in Ireland. I have been told that malt is going up from about 490 per tonne to 530 per tonne. This was for a whiskey distillery. Interestingly I was told that their yeast cost was also up by 10%.
