Title: PBW alternative
Post by: Eccipoo on November 20, 2016, 08:57:31 PM
Wondering have people any advice on PBW alternatives? It's stupidly dear unless bulk buying for how much you generally need to use. Have read of people using oxyclean but it can be a bit of a pain to get. Anyone used Asda/Tesco own oxy stain removers?

A lot of us use Lidls W5 "Oxy Power multi Purpose Stain Remover"

Its cheap as chips, its basically Sodium Per-Carbonate, so its a strong alkali cleaner coupled with atomic oxygen as the sanitiser.
Will clean and bleach stained platic vessels.

Highly recommended.

Oh and btw. if the misses uses Vanish laundry whitener stuff at €7 a tub this is the same (but without the perfume) for a lot less!

Just make sure not to use boiling water or you will denatured the enzymes

What's the deal with not leaving it in plastic? I tend to soak plastic fermenters with it and totally forget about them for a few weeks. Am I doing bad? :/

Only takes a couple of hours to totally clean, prolonged contact and the active ingredients get absorbed into the resin particularly with the translucent PP buckets.

Does anybody else use it on Stainless steel?

I use it to soak corny kegs. It's intended use is in the washing machine and that's stainless steel too.

Yes but again I don't like doing it for prolonged contact with rubbers of the corny

I use it to clean my braumeister. Run it for an hour at 60 and then leave it to soak overnight before a good rinse. Haven't seen any negatives so far

I use the Lidl W5 Oxy on everything, pots, kegs, fermenters, Bulldog. No problems. Usually 30-60 minutes does the trick. Water around 50ºC to get it active. Then a good rinse to clean it off. I find it can leave a white residue because it doesn't have chelating agents like PBW has. I usually add a teaspoon of PBW to the mix to solve this. It would be handy to buy the chelating agent and lower the cost a bit.

Yeah I use it on my SS kettle.

I use it with warm to hot water and clean it away with hotter water.

Would using heated rain water when cleaning eliminate the white residue due to the rain water being "soft water".
