Title: Kegging Question
Post by: vinyljunkie on November 24, 2016, 12:51:16 PM
I have an IPA and Cider almost ready to keg (Planning on kegging both next weekend). I'm wondering;

For the IPA - transfer to keg - purge the oxygen - put 20 lbs of CO2 on it for 4-5days then try it at serving pressure to see if the carbonation is ok?

For the Cider - What pressure should I be looking at to force carb?

Once the keg is carbonated and ready to go can I take it off the gas and leave in the fridge while i force carb the Cider (if it's a different to the IPA pressure)?

For the IPA I'd be interested in adding Gelatin as it's been quite cloudy when testing it so far or being the first time kegging should I just keep it simple?

All the questions :)

Check this graph out for carbonation pressures/temperatures
It'll help you get your cider to how fizzy you like it.

Regarding gelatine. You can use it if clarity is important to you.

What I'd do;
Gelatin in Fv 2 days shed 5 degrees or outside covered
Into corny outside cider 2 days 3 bar
Into corny IPA 3 days 3 bar
Colder it is quicker co2 goes into solution
If you need them for weekend start rock and rolling

- I'm planning on dry hopping for 3-5 days so  will I put the gelatin in with 2 days to go in dry hopping and move to shed?
Into corny outside cider 2 days 3 bar
- Not worried about the cider really - so lash into corny at 40psi for 3 days?
Into corny IPA 3 days 3 bar
Colder it is quicker co2 goes into solution
- Yes they will be in fridge while force carbonating
If you need them for weekend start rock and rolling
- Not in a rush

If you're not in a rush I think you should set it at the psi you want and leave it. It takes longer to carb but you'll have more control.  Since this is your first time you might have foaming issues etc and  you don't want to be wondering if it's your system or the pressure you carbed at.

as Q says just set at desired pressure and forget if not in a hurry.
DH then gelatin, you might find chilling for a week will drop out whatever is making it cloudy with the need for gelatin.

Cheers all! Just on the graph.... well what am I looking at??  ;D

I'm guessing the temperature is the temp of my fridge? So if my fridge is 40F and I want 3.01 I put 18 PSI on it?

How long does it take going this route?

lash her in fridge at 15 psi for a week, taste and then go up or down depending on how accurate your reg is, just cos it says 15psi on your reg doen't mean it is, just cos it says 5 degrees in your fridge doesn't mean it is ;)

So I've been dry hopping the IPA for the last 3 days, planning on cold crashing it now for 2 days then kegging with gelatin.

Question is, do I remove the airlock from FV (plastic bucket job) and put tape over it or throw the whole thing as is in the fridge? (Won't it try suck in air?)

I've never had an issue leaving the air lock on and I cold crash all my beer.

You do create a vacuum just make sure you have starsan solution or vodka in airlock, it won't go in unless you have it overfilled

Right so I'm up an running, Cider needs a few more weeks but IPA already tasting nice. Both need more carbonation so was planning on leaving them at 20psi for another few days.

Is is ok to leave the out attached to the taps while I crank up the PSI?

You can but I'd recommend disconnecting the out when force carbing as you may have a leak. It happened to me once last Christmas eve. Couldn't get gas for a week :(

Cheers everything going really well the IPA is lovely, trying to hold off drinking it until closer Christmas is going to be tough. The Cider needs more time and now I've a 3rd keg which also needs more time.

I done the SNPA clone recipe from this site. It's turned out nice, just needs more time I guess -  carbed it at 30PSI for a day then knocked it all off and back to serving pressure to try it, getting a LOT of foam though on the pour. Might just need a day to settle after carbing?

All sorted had a leak in the out post on the keg.
