Title: Ebay from India
Post by: DEMPSEY on December 07, 2016, 11:39:51 AM
Anyone bought anything from India through Ebay. Looking at a piece of gear around €150 but not sure if charges will apply :-\.

Probably be hit by Vat, Duty & handling charges, could add 50% on to price - are there any alternatives from the EU?

It's best time of the year to chance it if you are going to. It's coming by ordinary postage by the looks of it... which helps.

Looks v similar to this:
Radical 2000X Binocular Biology Medical Compound Vet Cordless Battery Led Microscope W 3D Xy Stage 100X Oil https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B014AZU6LS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_K0esybXK8KYP1

Not madly more expensive, £156, through Amazon suggests you wouldn't get hit with customs, etc.

No it won't be 50%

If its not excisable (like booze/perfume/cigs or some unknown cats) all you pay is vat at 23% on the cost of the product and the fekkinn shipping!

If you buy from India and for example its shipped by DHL then they act as agents for the ie.gov and charge you the dues PLUS their cut.

How do I know? Bitter experience! But still not 50%

The couriers have a standard robbery charge,  so depending upon the original cost of the item, when it's all totted up the percentage can be really high. I bought some cheap things from the states, I think the cost came to $12 from memory and they hit me for an extra €20. Plus I think they include a vat charge  on their cut, it was about 3 or 4 dollars vat plus their slice brought it up to 20.
It all goes through their hub in Germany, so even items which are vat exempt here like childrens clothes get hit because they are not vat free in Germany. It drives me crazy, so I always select the eml/an post option and wait the extra time.

Shouldn't as it's coming/sourced through EU (freedom movement of goods, etc)

Provided it's delivered by An Post max you can be charged is VAT plus the admin fee.

Avoid FedEx and all the other carriers.

Watch out for this crowd. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141936435150. This is the one I bid for and won but despite receiving lots of stuff from that part of the world this one never came. Have now got a refund but someone I know in Ebay told me that often companys will not deliver what you bid for if they did not get the real price they have. I was the only bidder at £115 and so paid for it and waited and waited and...
