Title: open source digital hydrometer
Post by: bigvalen on December 11, 2016, 07:41:55 PM

That's rather curious. Seems to be a decent digital hydrometer you can leave in your brew, and have it send out updates to how fermentation is progressing. They are usually €200 or more. Anyone up for trying to make some ? Just need a 3D printer..

you don't need a 3D printer, yo ucan take the STL file from here  (https://github.com/universam1/iSpindel/tree/master/drawer) and use Thingiverse (http://www.thingiverse.com/) to print it for you

I'm definitely interested though, as I was thinking of buying one of these  (http://tilthydrometer.com/products/brewometer)

Can you explain how that little yoke would measure your gravity?

A hygrometer is used in air conditioning for measuring moisture content of air, wet bulb and dry bulb temperature etc

Post by: johnrm on December 13, 2016, 11:07:08 PM
Did ye read the Github readme file?
To start it is a Hydrometer (OP corrected) - it works on the basis of the change of the angle of  tilt.
The change in tilt angle directly corresponds to a change in gravity.

Well I tried :-(.  Where would you get the container for it as well as the all the computery bits?
Title: Re: open source digital hydrometer

this is the container (from the readme file...)

http://cachers-world.de/de/Petling-XL (http://cachers-world.de/de/Petling-XL)

All the computery bits (sensors etc) you can get on ebay or aliepxress etc.

Ta Ed, just on the container, we're not to use blue plastic I thought in fermentation?

This is what you need to make it so:

Bauteile

    Wemos D1 mini
GY-521 Gyro & Beschleunigungssensor (MPU-6050 auf passendem breakout Board)
    DS18B20 Temperatursensor
    Lochrasterplatine 3x4cm
    Widerstände
        4k7 Ohm
        220k Ohm
        470 Ohm
    Mikro Schalter
18650 LiIo Zelle (z.B. Panasonic NCR18650B geschützt oder ohne PCB)
Lipo Lademodul TP4056 (6 pin recommended)

    Kunstoff Schlitten download
        alternativ (Lochraster) Platine UNGETESTED)

    Kunstoff Zylinder Petling Petling-XL

Yeah, i don't know about the container being food safe - the lid shouldn't be in the beer, but I imagine there'd be krausen getting onto it? I suppose any similarly shaped vessel could be used - glass with a rubber stopper might be safer from a flavour point of view?

quick search - maybe something like this?

What about the old whitelabs vials?
They have to be food safe, would they do?

I've a 3d printer here if needed.  I work with polymers on a daily basis  and i can produce replications also. If someone can sort the electronic side out we could all get these cheap

I've got a stainless steel fermenter and I'm wondering how this will affect the wireless signal to the device.

According to http://smallbusiness.chron.com/effects-metal-wireless-routers-73559.html metal can seriously disrupt wireless signals. No point in spending the cash if it can't connect to my router.

Anyone have any experience with stainless and WiFi?

Easy enough to test. Set your phone on wifi playing a saucy Rihanna video on YouTube, then put into the empty fermenter where you normally keep it. Close the lid. Listen carefully to the lyrics....
Don't let her indoors catch you doing this! ;)

I'm going to go ahead and order one of these.

Orders over €100 get free postage. If there are 3 others that are interested we will get it posted for free.

I can get them delivered to me and pass them out at the Nationals.

I'm going to get this one ... https://3d-mechatronics.de/de/ispindel-diy-set-ohne-batterie_147.html (€26.51 each)

If I get a chance I'll even assemble it prior to delivery.

Mick02, would we not be better off getting the spindle kits and just buy the preforms separately?

Based on the pricing the container is about a tenner, these are about E3 each http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XL-BIG-PET-Micro-Geocaching-container-geocache-cap-Petling-preform-soda-bottle-/131430402355?hash=item1e99dcc933:g:xscAAOSwPYZU36py
Title: Re: open source digital hydrometer
Post by: mick02 on January 13, 2017, 02:48:36 PM
Yeah, that website is a little confusing. The link that I posted says in the description - "This set consists of all components of the DIY WLAN spindle except the battery and the petling"

Then the other option, the €14.10 options states that "This set consists of all components of the DIY WLAN spindle except the battery, the petling and the sled"

The €14.10 option is unavailable now so either it's sold out or they aren't making any more of them.

I agree though buying the petling container separately is a better idea but I think that will need to be purchased regardless.

Are we just concerned about stock?

I know few lads in CraftBeerPi community are using them wirelles hydrometers, will try to ask them. Manuel, developer of CraftBeerPi is beta testing interface for his controller to work with same wirelles hydrometer, hence allowing his fermentation controller read temperature and gravity live.

It's looking like a quarter of the price of a tilt. Craftbeerpi have interfaced to it I am sure if Elco got enough interest he would add it to brewpi

Just needs battery and PET preform.
I've not had time to figure preform yet, but these should be inexpensive.
Has anyone researched the PET yet, would love to just click and pay, lazy me...
