Hello Lads and Lassies, it's that time of year again when we look for our amazing Stewards to help the NHC Competition run smoothly.
The Fifth Annual NHC Competition is fast approaching and we need your help both in Dublin and Sallins.
We need roughly 20 stewards and 2 cellar people for the Dublin competition and about 10+ and 1 cellar person for Sallins. If you have a someone else to bring along to steward please put their name down wives/husbands! I promise we'll take good care of them :) As we have witnessed over the years, stewards really are the backbone of the whole day and without whom the day would be a fiasco!
Volunteers would be asked to be present from 9.30 in the morning until around 6 or 7 in the evening. Lunch and a pint will be included (free of charge), aswell as the super limited edition NHC polo shirt and you will also get the opportunity to be up close and personal with all the judging action.
Your duties on the day will include running beers, in order, from the cellar to the judges, cross checking beer scores and keeping the judges timing in check.
Stewarding is also a great starting point for those wishing to further their beer education and personal judging abilities.
I will post further information about the day nearer the time, for now I am looking for your commitment to what has proven to be a great day out in past years :)

Function is to take the beers from the celler and have them in order for the stewards to be able to bring them to the judges.

I put my name down initially as both a steward and cellarman but it looks like I can scrub my name off the steward list as nobody else is on the cellarman list. Is cellarman basically just lugging crates of bottles from the cellar for the stewards?

Last year at least the cellarman just handed the relevant bottles to the stewards. All the crates were left on the pub floor so there was no lugging to do. Not sure if that is the way it will work this year too.

Cellarman used to be a bit more of a job than it is now. When we started off we were all a bit clueless so it helped to have one person doing the cellar work. Now that a lot of stewards have experience I've found I've had very little to do as cellarman.

Only the Cellarman should hand out bottles as stewards tend to return them to random locations, important if judges want a retaste at end of flight

I encourage anyone who's thinking about it to register and do something on the day, even just listening to the judges talk about the beer gives a great insight into the brewing process, off flavours and the reasons for them, not to mention it's doing something for the club.
It's also a great club social event, get to meet other brewers from all around the country, and also Club Royalty like CH.

For stewards? I'm not sure tables were allocated to Stewards until the morning-of last year.
I think the comments above were people stating that they had entries in certain categories. I don't think a steward can be at a table where they have a beer being judged. Prevents anyone trying to sway the judges opinions.

In sallins some stewards were assigned to tables before the day. Tables had signs with the category and the judges and stewards on them.
Once everyone is registered on the site the organisers can pre-assign them tables and see what categories they should not be on, same applies for judges.

I knew ahead of time last year which category I'd be stewarding for, it was listed on the registration site. Not to worry, only being nosey.

Yup, I'm doing that so we can avoid things like first-time stewards on tables with big flights.
Also, I respect preferences in the system as much as I can.
