Title: grain choice
Post by: Laughgov on January 18, 2017, 11:59:19 PM
Hi, all got me mill - with me free viking pale malt the other day. I am going to start doing recipe. What would be the best way - get a generic bag or two of grain that makes up the base of most swag and then get other specialist grain as per recipe with hops etc., or get made to order for all on the tinterweb

It comes down to what you brew and how frequently.

I've switched over to ordering grain much closer to brewday and getting base grain in 10kg. Everytime I get 25kg, it's a pain to get home and doesn't get used fast enough.

Some of the specialist grain you can keep to hand and others I'd just get per order. Munich and Vienna go fast and some of the crystals if you brew with them. It costs less than 5 euro every 6 months to keep a range of fresh crystal around for example.

Aim to use anything you've bought in 6 months and that will give you an idea how to order.

Thanks a million for this. It seems like should be a real cost saving as well.
