Title: Chest freezer to a fermentation chamber
Post by: murt on February 10, 2017, 11:04:00 AM
Hi Guys,

Going using my chest freezer as a fermentation chamber. I'm going installing a tube heater & want to drill a hole for the wire as the top won't close with the wire.

Does anyone know where the safest spot to drill as I don't want to hit any of the cooling rings/tubes on freezer wall?

Any suggestions?

Cheers

I had an ice cream fridge that I wrecked by hitting the gas pipe on the corner  :-[. If you cannot be certain where the cooling pipes are then try Google or YouTube with the brand of fridge you have.

Look for the equipment specification documents online. There should be diagrams and schematics available.

There is a method using corn starch to find the pipes, google it.

dont drill, although for cost reasons most chilling is in the floor of lower priced CF's
pierce outer skin
with a nail or dart gently gently push through removing foam as you go measure wall thickness so that you know based on the length of your nail when you have hit inside, obviously if you meet any resistance stop!
If you remove too much foam don't panic a squirt of that expanding stuff next time you have a job for it will cover it.

"clean the outside of the fridge. make a thin mixture of cornstarch and alcohol, paint it on the area you plan to drill. paint it in a few other places too, just to be sure it works. turn the fridge to its coldest setting. you will likely see a ghost of the coils after a while. don't drill in that spot."
