Post by: Spud395 on December 06, 2012, 10:29:38 PM
So who makes it? And how?

Never had it but I'm curious and will try some this year?

Give us your granny's best recipe

It's more or less a thin custard with rum, not my scene at all.

Recipe for Eggnog
Ingredients
4 eggs
1 tablespoon caster sugar
1/3 cup sugar
1 pint milk
1 cup dbl cream
1 teaspoon nutmeg
3 oz rum/Bourbon or (Vodka at a push)

Method
Separate the eggs ( whites from yolk )
Beat the yolks then add the sugar and continue beating until sugar is dissolved .
Mix in the milk, cream, nutmeg and alcohol.
Whisk the egg whites in a separate bowl until stiff then add tablespoon of caster sugar continue whisking until it forms stiff peaks (or you can turn bowl upside down without mixture falling out ).
Finally whisk all ingredients together and chill.
You now have the perfect Eggnog (still tastes like sh**)

That's a raw eggnog, I know the cooked version, basically the same ingredients, but you make a custard and add alcohol.

It is vile though either way, the Germans make one called eiergrog.
I get a very sick stomach from raw eggs, not for me at all.

<edit> in fact no, I remember we used to have that cold mix and heat it and cook it using a capuccino steamer head on the coffee machines. It would thicken and cook from the steam.

I made it last year from a recipe I found on the net.
Captain Morgans was the rum.
Google and theres loads of them.
I thought it was nice.

Any one old enough to remember the Christmas advert for Warninks Advocaat:

Put on a phoney Dutch accent!:

"Morninks and Evenincks I drink my Warniks"

When I first met the misses (1974) she loved snowballs - Premix  came in a little bottle.

When I made her a REAL snowball ( Advocaat, Brandy, Lime Juice and a tiny bit of lemonade ) she realised she had met a real brewer. The rest is history!

Watched one of those christmas drink programs with Oz Clarke and hugh something last night, and they made eggnog, but I'd say they made a right balls of it, as all the egg clumped together and it looked rank, although they said it tasted nice. I'll stick to the Irish coffees and hot toddies myself!

Thin alcoholic custard sounds deadly to me, although the Irish coffee is hard to beat alright

It sounds alright, until you have a large glass of it, it gets sickly very fast.
