Title: Sweet Stout High Final Gravity
Post by: brianbrewed on February 27, 2017, 10:30:48 AM
I brewed up a milk stout based on Jamil's sweet Stout recipe on the 09/02/17.

Recipe was:
Pale Ale 4.6kg
Black Patent 450g
Crystal 80 340g
Chocolate 230g

EKG 55g @ 60mins

500g of Lactose dumped into the fermentor (forgot to add during boil.)
Used 1 sachet of Safale S-04.

Bubbled away nicely but seems to have stopped the last 10days around 1022.
The expected FG was 1013.

Anybody any ideas?

What was your OG? Was it spot on?
I had a discussion with another brewer yesterday and we were talking about poorly calibrated hydrometer. First of are you confident that your equipment is giving you the correct reading?
If so you could try upping your temp a bit and see if you can eek a few more points out of the yeast.

The lactose has added unfermentable sugar which will bring up your FG reading I think.

The OG was 1052.

Was that your expected OG? If you hit your numbers then it's most likely the unfermentable sugar like Qs mentioned in the above post.

1052 was the expected OG.
Looks like it's ready then.

I've had the exact same "issues". I knew lactose increased the fg but thought something was still off. I used us-05 and got it down to 1.019 but having googled it, it would seem a common occurrence to be in the 1.020 range

Just checked the 'Brewing Classic Styles' and the expected FG was 1023.
Looks like I have finished up.

Problem was I was just checking my brewing software which doesn't take into my account the effect the lactose has on the Gravity.
