Title: Thats Gas
Post by: Slev on March 14, 2017, 12:50:14 AM
Am just getting set up for kegging. And will hopefully, get to bray next week (very rare opportunity).
I have an undercounter  fridge that will cater for 2 kegs.  Considering that i have no convenient refiller nearby (that i know of)- am i better of getting 3 no 2kg tanks (thought is that when i run out of 1, i have time to arrange an exchange and send one off while still having a bit of redundancy).
Also, do i need to book ahead or just drop in, to A J's?

I only have one tank for serving but I work close to AJs. It takes me about a year with three taps to work through it. I think 3 tanks is overkill

You just turn up to AJs

Are you carbing and serving with that tank Phil? Is it a 5kg. How many kegs roughly do you get out of a tank. Cheers

I naturally carb most times. I have another tank for force carving if needed. Mine is a US tank and its smaller than 5kg

Better off with 5 kgs tanks same price to buy and fill unless your in a flat and space is tight
Try not to go to AJ before 10 in the morning as they can be mad busy and they close early on a Friday 3.30 so won't do anything for you after 3!
I was in there a week ago and a guy getting gas for a theatre company was getting charged 25 for a 5kg tank, so I was told not to spread it around about our charge which is the same for the aquatic guys that get their fills there.

I've a 5kg tank from then and I've never had it refilled. Had it 2 years. Had just the one tap for most of that time but 2 since last summer. I always feel like I'm wasting a lot of co2 during kegging etc but there's still plenty there. I think I'll buy a second tank soon for convenience on kegging day.

Flushjng barrels, pressurising kegs, pushing co2 heads on fermenters, flushing with co2 first during transfer to keg, filling kegs for storage with co2, you are not long getting through a tank.
I only dispense with mixed

Some good advice. Thanks all.
Intend on force carbing and serving.
So....  How thinking i should get a 5kg tank (will need to drill, as won't fit into the fridge (i think)) and a 2kg, for back up and portability, if needed.

(hope to be there next Wednesday, but not sure how i am fixed, atm, but possibly could pick up a tank for someone down the country if needed. No promises, but would like to accommodate if possible)

I have a 6kg and a 2kg. If i was starting again i'd get a 5kg and a 2kg.
It's handy to have the 2kg sitting around for when the 6kg empties.
You get a few months buffer time for your refill.
a 2kg is also handy for times when you need to bring a keg somewhere. You can just strap it to the keg :)

I always PM AJ Edge through the forum before I call down.

I'll be looking for another co2 tank soon too as I'm going to need one for my aquarium.  Going to give a full planted aquarium a try, but that's for another forum.

I could come down the M8, as far as urlingford, if that is of use to yourself or beerdoog.
(could detour from work some evening and meet some where  in between (work in Cashel, home in templemore).

Beerdoog can accomodate  :)

I'd drive to Templemore some evening, no problem at all if that suits you better?

Picked up the gas. They everything ready and waiting. No hassles whatsoever.
Will hold the tanks, to when ever suits. They are out of the way, so there is no panic my end.
