Title: Smithwicks Summer Ale Comp
Post by: irish_goat on March 18, 2017, 02:37:32 PM
Just realising we don't have an actual discussion thread on the competition itself...

Entry closes in just over a month anyway for anyone looking to enter.

Are there many of us entering? I have my brew bottled and conditioning. Tasted it about 3 weeks ago and it was horrible. I was thinking I wouldn't bother entering. Tasted it when I bottled it up and it had MASSIVELY improved.

Didn't get any feedback the first year so not bothering myself. Without critique you can't improve which is an important part of comps for me.

That's one of the main things we've brought up with them this year. Due a call from one of the brewers this week to discuss judging anyway.

When listing ingredients for your entry do you have to list the amount of grain you used or just what grains used?

no, just what you've used, the winner will have to give a fuller detailed list

I didn't enter previously. Decided to go for it this year for the craic as it's slightly more interesting this time around.

There's only one, that's an office in Dublin. Shipping it is your only option if you can't physically get there.

Yes, I did so today. There is a little desk immediately on the left when you go in the door.

I went in today and asked about Storage, a girl told me the beers were being stored in a fridge on that premises, being transported in a refridgerated van to be stored in a fridge "somewhere in Diageo".

Tis a terrible tragedy altogether.

They emailed me this morning at 8am . Assuming none of the other NHC lads have had a chance to read it yet. They've concluded a final winner, basically they wanted to ensure from the winner that T's & C's could be met first (or move to 2nd place winner etc)

Anyway - The first place winner was confirmed- official announcement from Smithwicks is due after the brewday. I won't ruin that for them by posting it here, but I can assure you it's coming.

The homebrew entry that won was very good, hopefully the brewery version follows the same.

There has been a winner... And its one of our own! Donny of this parish, ( and the resurrected South Central Brewers)  was chosen as the overall winner, with a lime and mango infused beer  going by the name " Jamaican Me Crazy".
He had been asked to keep things under wraps by the smithwicks folk, until they had things in order.
Tis a great day for the parish of the South Central  Brewers really.

Just a follow up , Donny's got to brew his beer in James Gate during the summer. And they how have it on tap in their open gate pub thingie.
He didn't want to say anything, but I thought it deserved a mention. (and it's always nice to get a conclusion /follow up on a story) spot beer no 4 on the board

Great Stuff - Well done again Donny!  Can it be got anywhere else, or exclusively in Open Gate?  I thought that it was to be on a few taps around Dublin.  Would love to get to try it.

I have a few bottles for myself alright but its only available on tap in the open gate brewery. I was up there myself last Friday and it was crazy to see everyone drinking it.

Had to change the name from "Jamaican me Crazy" to "The Jamaican" as Diageo didnt like the word "crazy" as it implies going crazy on drink  :-X
