Hi all,
I am currently in the final stages of a two year MBA program and am conducting research into Craft beer Tourism as a means of developing the Craft beer industry within Ireland. Most of my research data will come from interviews with brewery owner as I want to assess their understanding of and commitment to the topic, but I would also love to hear your opinions (Not for inclusion in the paper, but more so for idea generation for the interviews).
What does Craft beer tourism mean to you? Have you engaged in it either in Ireland or abroad? If so, why did you engage in it? What opportunities or challenges does it present to Irish micro-breweries?
Any thoughts, ideas or feedback on this would be really appreciated.

It's in Caparica which is just south of Lisbon. The craft scene is starting to kick off over here now so hopefully that will bode well for us.
Yeah, I was there recently and noticed that. The quality wasn't there though so a great opportunity. Hope it goes well, love seeing someone taking the initiative

The quality is definitely improving though, today I had an amazing session red IPA, probably better than most beers I've had back home. As for taking the initiative that is yet to be seen, it could turn out to be a fools errand!

There are a few good bars, look for Duque, Lisbeer, Cerevteca and Chimera. Dois Corvos have a nice tap room but it's a little out of the way but worth a trip in my opinion. Also check the opening times of the bars, I know that Duque only opens at 4pm. Not sure about the others. Apologies for hijacking your thread OP.
Just back from Seattle after a week and enjoyed many local beers in breweries. WE NEED TAPROOMS!! Not open until 6pm, only with tours taprooms. We need proper personal licenses for brewery owners. Its very simple for breweries in the UK or mainland europe to do this. No reason we should be different

To me it means going someplace specifically for the beer.
This generally means a sequence of breweries (or sometimes specialty pubs) within walking distance of each other.
I've done this to taste beers or breweries I've never tried + because beer is often in its best condition at the brewery.
I've done what I'd call beer tourism in Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, London (Google "Bermondsey Beer Mile" if you haven't already,) Brussels, Amsterdam, and the Hudson Valley, NY.
Breweries being legally restricted from having tasting rooms/growler fills is the giant barrier to beer tourism in Ireland.
Richard from Black Donkey said once, "If we changed the law to allow tasting rooms, 10 breweries would open in Dublin tomorrow."
(That's not as much hyperbole as it sounds - Vancouver got 20+ breweries in the 18 months after changing their licensing laws in March, 2013.)
