Title: Dry Hopping a Pilsner?
Post by: JDC on May 19, 2017, 10:22:47 AM
Hi All, I'm going to be brewing a Pilsner tomorrow (my second ever) and keeping it as simple as possible.  I have 5 KG of Viking Pilsner Malt, and was going to just use Hallertauer Hersbruker (which is what I did before) and Fermentis Saflager S-23 as my yeast.  Really couldn't be much simpler, but the last time I did it, it turned into a lovely crisp clean beer after months of lagering (in the bottle).

My two questions are:

1. I also have Hallertauer Mittelfruh, Tettnang and Saaz (which I believe is more of Czech Pilsner - I'm going for German on this one) in the freezer.  Should I stick to my guns and just use the Hersbruker, or could I come up with a nicer beer with a combination of the above?

2. I was in Berlin a few weeks ago and tried a Pilsner with Citra, which was truly amazing and have been dying to try my own version since.  Therefore, I was going to split the batch (half as normal, and half dry hopped with Citra in secondary for 3 days).  My worry is that this will be a waste of time, if the Citra flavour will be lost after months of lagering.  I can see how this would work in the keg, where you can add the Citra hops later, but as mine will be bottle conditioned and stored cold, my feeling is that the Citra will be long gone by the time the beer is served.  Any thoughts on this?

I'm not far off the kegging stage, so may need to revisit this idea when fully set up.

Lager first then dry hop?
Look up quick lagering method for the Citra idea

Brulosopher has a good guide on the fast Lager method that would be worth a try

Cheers Both. Just read that Brulosophy quick lager method - very interesting and I think I might just give it a go (sure we're here to learn  ;)). Anyone else on here tried it?

But it's definitely essential to have a big starter and temp control like any lager.

Just saw the OP. Brooklyn Lager is dry hopped.
