Hey folks,
I thought I'd post a summary of things club-related happening over the next few weeks, for the benefit of both members and non-members. If the general consensus finds this kind of thing useful I'll continue to post these periodicals, if not we'll allow it to quietly fizzle out like Banjo bars and Johnny Logan's career.
I'll start this first one off fairly light. If the interest is there for future posts, I'll continue to hone the format and content towards something that works best.
(If I've missed or misrepresented anything below then please let me know and I'll update)
Competitions/events
17th June – Lager workshop – Lock 13 Sallins
http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/events/lager-workshop-sat-17th-june/
This will be hosted by Brendan and Kellie in preparation for the Lager competition on September 30th. This is an excellent opportunity to receive invaluable tips and insight from one of the club's most decorated brewers.
17th June – Belfast Brewday with SPBW – Brewbot Bar
http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/belfast-homebrewers/mayjune-meet-and-brew-day/
Brewbot bar will pay host to the Belfast Homebrewers, as they cook up a session pale on a Grainfather system. As an added twist, the resulting brew is going to be conditioned in a wooden pin, supplied by the SPBW group. Hey nonny-nonny!
25th June - North Country Brewers "Be Kind To Your Liver" Session Beer competition
http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/competitions/north-country-brewers-'be-kind-to-your-liver'-session-beer-competition/
You love a few beers in the summer sun, but are afraid of falling asleep on the barbecue...again? Well, this event may just save the other side of your face!
Just to be aware, if you're thinking of entering, registration closes this Sunday (4th).
Future Competitions/Events
30th Sept – South Kildare Lager Competition http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/competitions/south-kildare-lager-competition/
Late August to mid October - Capital Sour Competition
http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/competitions/capital-sour-comp/
Late October – Belfast Quintessential Competiton
Nov 25th - Brew Na Bóinne 2017 Stout Competition
http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/competitions/save-the-date-brew-na-boinne-2017/
February/March 2018 – the Nationals (more to come in the next few months, but it's never too early to get brewing)
April 2018 – Brewcon – More details including date to follow soon but, just to be on the safe side, plan NOTHING else for April. You have been warned :)
Other Topics
Club Membership
New members are joining every day, but even more the merrier. For the benefits it brings (Affiliated company discounts, Group buy savings, Nationals competition entry, etc.) it's an absolute STEAL at 10 Euro for 12 months! So take the plunge, poke your friends, reap the benefits!
NHC groups
If you feel you're not completely served by the existing groups, and reckon you have the bodies and the interest in starting your own local group, then let us know and we'll help you set it up, get established and offer the benefit of our experience in helping it grow. We've all been though that first time where you creep into the corner of the pub, eyes shifting around till they meet another pair of similarly frightened eyes, the uncomfortable shuffling and clinking of bottles and beards towards a table where the word 'Reserved' , hastily biro'd onto the back of a food menu, has just been spotted... it's easy street from then on. There's a local club guide currently in the works, so stay tuned.
Competitions
You want your club to host a competition but are unsure of the ways and wherefores? Again, we're here to offer you help and insight and help you through that first competition. There're plenty of seasoned veterans in the NHC who are only too happy to walk and talk you through the process. Ever open to liquid bribes, I've always fancied a trip to Longford/Roscommon/Monaghan/etc. Well, okay, maybe not Monaghan
NHC Merchandise
We're in the middle of resurrecting the whole concept of NHC t-shirts, hats, mugs, etc. There'll be more to come on the subject but, in the meantime, suggestions are always welcome.
Member Group buys
One of the biggest benefits of club membership. You spot some good deal on brewing related goods, but it requires the power of the bulk buy? Then let us know and we'll help you get it off the ground. Obviously within reasonable bounds, e.g. the line has to be drawn at packages of 'stock' from the lesser-known Central American states; not everyone likes coffee.
The forum vs WhatsApp groups
This topic has come up a number of times already. The scenario whereby you sign up to the NHC, join a local club and disappear down the rabbit hole of that club's WhatsApp group all too easily happens. I'm not for one second knocking WhatsApp; it's essential for quick questions, favours, organising things etc., but I would strongly encourage you to still continue posting on the forum as well. There's a wealth of tips and info floating out there in the WhatsApp cloud, that could really benefit both established and emerging forum members alike.
Lastly...
To avoid the risk of sounding like Jerry with his Final Thought, or Kevin McCloud standing in front of a house getting on all prosaic about it being more than just a house, I'll leave it there for now. Just remember the NHC is your club, so use it. Feedback and comments are always appreciated.
Happy brewing and even happier weekend!
Cheers,
-Barry
Great format and well put together.Great to see a line up of events and things to come.
As regards to the following.

I would assume that you have someone lined up for providing though if not there is a fellow brewer who supplied merchandise on The Homebrew Forum who is very reasonable.I'm also a member of this forum and could put you in touch and not wanting to step on anyone's toes by the way.Just a suggestion.👍

Gerryjo,
Cheers for the post. Any suggestions you have for suppliers please pass on. We're looking for deals that suit the club best.
Also looking for other suggestions for types of merch too e.g. key rings, bottle openers, balloons, pants, etc
Cheers,

Stickers would be nice too.
Trucker caps
Does anyone have a picture of the NHC glasses that they could post or link to?
Cheers,
-Barry
P.s. Hilarious pictures of spectacles will be severely frowned upon.

Hey Thomas. Another quick question - what's the capacity of those glasses? From the pic I'd say about 440ml?
Cheers,
-Barry
There's a half pint line mark about 10mm from the top
Right? So they're about 275 ml?
Checking out prices for a few items of NHC merchandise and need to specify glass size.
Cheers Delzep,
-Barry
This is the exact one here. http://www.festivalglass.co.uk/beer/12oz-Siam-Beer-Stem-Glass-34cl
I'd take a few pint glasses too though.
Should we start a separate thread for merch ideas?
Brilliant. Thanks Thomas. I'll get a price on both sizes.

What about a set of those "craft beer glasses" branded?
Beanie Hat?
I'd gladly buy glasses, a polo and things like keyring bottle openers and a hat

Probably better with the 350ml / 12 fl oz size no?
Stickers and tin signs would be class.
Credit card bottle openers with the NHC logo might be nice. You'd never be stuck for a bottle opener again!

What about a brewday towel.

I've already taken the above approach, i.e. start small in both numbers and range of goods, with a lead provided by Gerryjo (cheers).
I'm currently getting prices for:
300 glasses
100 t-shirts (of varying sizes - colour options available too)
100 postcard-sized stickers
100 trucker caps
100 mugs
The company in question is UK-based, so need to think about delivery, distribution and payment, should we go ahead with them.
For example, do we get them delivered to Belfast (to save on postage) and then work on getting them divided up amongst the reps of the various clubs for sale to members? That could get messy. How was this done with the glasses in the past?
For t-shirts, we need to think about sizes e.g. out of 100 t-shirts do we go for 50 medium, 20 large and 15 small and 15 XL? Never sold clothes before so don't know the most efficient size distribution on bulk orders.
Colours as well; do we limit to 5 colours (Black, white, red, green, blue)?
Initial signs are that the glasses will be the most expensive of the above, especially if individually wrapped. How much are we prepared to pay for a glass?
Opinions welcomed here.
Cheers,
-Barry
@Bazza,if you have a list of prices would it be possible to email the list to all members to get a general consensus on the most popular requests so as to gauge what is feesable regarding value, delivery and distribution costs for members.

While looking up stuff like this would it be worth getting stickers/signs with the Nhc logo and web address so pubs that host meetings can display if they want as a bit of advertising?

Might be worth doing a survey on that. I'd imagine the average homebrewer is a size up from the average citizen.

Haha! We could also save money on material by removing the area that's normally hidden by huge beards. Should I get a price on sandals too? :P

Yep; my initial guess was just to get the ball rolling. While I concede that 9.999% of potential customers are partial to a beer or two, is 50/100 not a little high for XL?
Anyway. This is a rough draft of proposed costing. Obviously subject to minor change:
tshirt = 10 euro
glass = 7 euro
hat= 5 euro
sticker = 1 euro
mug = 6 euro
How does that look for starters?
-Barry

Those prices include bulk delivery to Belfast.
Individual postage/distribution would be extra, but we still need to nail down the best way to distribute them. Might be an idea for the reps for each club to take a pile of each and distribute to members upon payment?

Any chance of Teku?
Also, some form of tee or polo would be nice to see.

Would it be possible to get the glass personalized with your name although possibly extra but would be a nice personal touch.

The cost of the glasses is based on us ordering 300 units in bulk, in order to keep postage down. We'd either have to wait till we'd a large enough commitment for personalised glasses, which could take a long time, or agree on a cut-off date by which those wanting personalised glasses submit their order, and the remainder of the order be for 'plain' nhc logo glasses.
It's a nice idea but maybe we should try and keep things reasonably straightforward for now till we've a decent system worked out. Again, open to suggestions.

Those glasses are class looking! Need to work out how to slip a couple into my collection.
Agree, class - stick me down for a couple. Can they go lower down with the logo by any chance? With it being white you won't see it as well after a few sips. Lower down would make it visible for longer........just a thought.
Looking great, I'd definitely open the wallet for a few of these.
I may have to smash some glasses to make room.
Would buy some too. Agree that the logo might look better a bit lower down?
Is there a rough date for when merchandise will be available? will it be a pre-order set up as to get numbers down? or just bulk buy with a first come first serve basis?

Date all depends on when we can finalize the style and layout. Then I'll get a timeline from the supplier. I anticipate with the first order it'll be a modest-ish bulk buy of about 100 and then first come first served. Hopefully subsequent bulk orders should be quicker.

Yes glass looks great like that.
Just a quick update on the Teku glasses. The supplier has managed to source them at a reasonable-ish price, but requires a minimum order of 480 units. I think that's a little ambitious for just starting out, but if anyone can suggest an alternative supplier then please let me know.
For now, I'll order 100 of the stem glasses and see how they shift.
I'll start a separate thread for the first order. I was thinking folk could put their name, club, number of glasses required (maybe limit it to 5 per person??) and what they've paid via paypal. First come first served.
It's important that the club is specified to help distribution from Belfast.
I will include the specifics in the thread but how does the above sound? Thoughts?
Cheers,
-Barry
Shoot Andreas at Rastal an email. He is the rep for them UK & Ireland. He's here every few weeks. Nice guy, might sort ye out if ye tell him the story, or at very least he might ship ye the right amount of blank glasses & ye can get them laser etched somewhere.

2.03e per teku 1 colour print if you order 500 glasses. Then add VAT & 205e to ship the pallet to Ireland.
Cheers. Will follow up with him, see what he can do for us.
In the meantime, do we still want to order those 100 stemmed glasses?

Yep, I'd take a few.
Yes please, I'd take some as well.
+1 I would be interested in a few
I'd take a set of 4 glasses no problem to start with - be the few glasses in my collection I've had to pay for as the rest mainly consist of borrowed ones :)
I'll get some too.
I'd take 4!
Mise freisin. ;)
Up for two please👍

This thread is about ideas!
Should we start some sign-on pages for people who want stuff?
I'll take 2 or 4 glasses.
think 100 would be gone fairly quickly
Hi folks,
Been on holidays so only getting back to such matters today.
I've created a new board called 'NHC Merchandise' under 'Buy and Sell' and created a new topic for the first order (batch size=96) of the stem glasses.
Should all be pretty self-explanatory:
