Title: Portable Reverse Osmosis system
Post by: Acott on June 19, 2017, 03:03:36 PM
Well lads,

I currently live in rented accommodation and was wondering if there was something like a portable RO system?

I came across this (http://www.hbrewo.com/) one, but the price range is crazy. Do you think the likes of this (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Finerfilters-Aquatic-4-Stage-Compact-Reverse-Osmosis-Unit-with-DI-Resin-100GPD-/332179448654?hash=item4d5770234e:g:AVYAAOSw3utY66fU) would produce similar results?

RO is RO.
Either build a custom enclosure with a handle or shoehorn it into one of these...

I don't mind the case, more so if the 4 stage will produce good RO water for brewing / drinking as it said it's for Marine/Aquatic use  :-\

These do the job. Very small and portable

That box above is 35l.
Bit big for the job!

I've one of these and I agree. Theres no special box with it but the cardbox it comes in isn't big at all and the system seems to work fine for me and is reasonably quick.

Hey Qs, do you just connect as you need it or do you leave it connected? Is your system 4 stage or 3 stage?

Appreciate the help!

Bit of a discussion here.

I connect mine as needed. (but i have had to change the membrane after 6 months, as the out put slowed dramatically. I do have a very hard source of water. One of the other folks on here, has suggested that regular use may be better for the membrane life).
I just leave it sitting on the ground when in use, and packbit away in a box when not. Takes up little room

Ah brilliant, it sounds bang on for what I need then!

Cheers Slev!

3 stage. Yeah I just keep it in the shed and screw it onto the outside tap whenever I brew. I've done 3 or 4 brews with it now and I'm quite happy with how its working out for me.

Now I've no way to really check well its working and I'd pretty soft water anyway but I've been happy with the beer I'm making since I got it.

As a "newbie" to the homebrew scene, I'll not be wanting to go down this road for quite some time, but just curious....Does RO give you basically water with all minerals removed and you then add what you want to match the beer style you are brewing ?

Yep. Thats the idea anyway.

What flow rate do you get on the output. I have under sink RO installed at home and the flow rate is terrible, grand for a glass of water but not for 30L.

I use my under sink Ro. I just disconnect the out and put it to a plastic 25L container for about 6 hours to fill. I need 30-40 for a brewday and I have 2 containers

No worries. Buried in a thread. I was just been lazy There is a bit alright, but you can collect and use for other purposes.
I added a pump with results in approx 9l per hour.
Perhaps the higher capacity ones give better output (other folks on here, have indeed quoted a higher output rate)

But is it worth it? - in my case, i feel it is. My water is very hard. My pale ales, or ipas always had a certain off flavour, which i associated with my water, rightly  or wrongly.  Haven't noticed it since using ro with minerals (however, more likely, was the fact that when i was using the hard water, i was only starting out, and as my process  control began improving, it coincided with me using ro water, to produce better beer.)

But thats just my opinion. As other folk (irish goat, i think) have said, probably better getting all your other processes nailed down first, before fretting about your water (if your water is any way ok)

What kinda off flavour were you getting with your IPA?. I have ro water but still getting the same off flavour. Can't put my finger on it. I'm gonna bottle a few and try run it by a few experts on here if anyone is willing

Was mainly a harshness, that i was attributing to the water (bear in mind, this was only a notion of mine) but any pa or ipa would have a harsh bitterness, even when i reduced the bittering additions. And the flavour tended to have hard lines, if you know what i mean. They didn't blend or ease into each other as i hoped they would. All in all, resulted in ok but ultimately disappointing pa/ipas. These aspects have definitely improved once i started to control for my water input ( use to use half purified water and half my own source, but now just start with ro and add minerals).

Yeah, I have been doing the same with half and half. Going to do exactly what you said and go totally ro

Mine arrived last week, haven't had the chance to connect it up yet, much check the flow rate on it!

Make sure to read instructions about flushing the pre-filters before you connect up to the RO membrane.

Assuming it has these instructions like our 3 cartridge jobbys did.!!

Sorry, i mis appropriated the above advise. It was indeed Will_D, who advised on the above, but much more eloquently
