Title: Grills & wire basket
Post by: cruiscinlan on July 18, 2017, 01:34:15 AM
Looking to get parts together for a smoker build, so if anyone has an old wire shopping basket or the grill from an old barbecue they're throwing out let me know please!

Have a look on adverts.ie
You'll often find old BBQs there with all the suitable grill bits for free or just a few quid.

Ta for that LordEoin, my problem though is I've no car to pick up with donedeal or adverts so it'd be more practical to get parts through the club.

Something that seems impossible to buy is a wire shopping basket as well.

Check shops that sell ovens (Powercity, DID, etc), they may have the grill racks from old display models

Shopping baskets are galvinised IIRC. Probably not something you want around food. See http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/100584/galvanized-steel

Something I have used in a (since retired) smoker/grill is a stainless steel pot stand from IKEA, wasn't great though, the shape was funny and the gaps too large. A lot of guys on that forum above just use regular expanded steel welded/bolted to a frame. Similar to cast iron pans, they're considered food-safe.

You could use the rack off one of those disposable BBQ's . One a couple of them and cut to size needed. Rack out of an oven?

Thanks for that, I wouldn't have considered that, my thought was to use it for the charcoal basket in the bottom of the smoker.  Could you put up a link to the IKEA pot stand?  Were you using it to cook on or as a charcoal holder?

Yeah, it was this one http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/products/cookware/cooking-accessories/l%C3%A4mplig-trivet-stainless-steel-art-30111087/

I was using it to cook on, but it would only be good for large pieces of meat like pork shoulder or ribs, anything else would fall through.

What style of smoker build are you looking at? I might have some parts that would be useful to you too.

Visit local recycle centre, find an oven being dumped, take oven shelves.

The issue here is that I don't know how well they'd fit.  I'm planning on an Ugly Drum smoker type so square shelves could waste a lot of space.

Will thanks a mill for the offer, I'll be in touch, there'll be an ale loaf in it for ya  :-*!
