Post by: delzep on August 24, 2017, 09:10:27 PM
Liffey Brewers next tasting evening is on the 31st of August in the lounge of the Lucan County in the Spa Hotel. All welcome with or without homebrew for feedback and discussion. Kick off is at 7:30.

As something a bit new, we're going to do a full bjcp type analysis of the first couple of beers (about 10/15 minutes each) as well as some more informal feedback on all other beers. If you'd like your homebrew to have a more detailed bjcp scoresheet just shout below. Mini write up of the evenings beers will be on here too shortly after the event

Please put your name down if you plan to attend so we can get an idea of numbers beforehand, thanks

Good night in the Lucan County yesterday. We kicked off just after 7:30 with 5 of us for the beer tasting (Myself, Eanna, Diarmuid, Ross and Donal).

As a bit of a learning exercise, it was decided that the first two beers would be "judged" using BJCP scoresheets. This was the first time we have done this at a club meeting, and it was interesting as none of us are BJCP trained, however we all used our various levels of experience of drinking and brewing different types of beer. The two beers judged were a centennial APA (18B) and an ordinary bitter (11A). Overall, most of the judges remarks were pretty similar and the feedback was welcomed by both brewers, although it seemed that due to a lack of availability with ordinary bitter in Ireland, it was quite difficult to judge.

After this judging session, the group moved onto a more traditional informal tasting session.

First up was a oat & wheat ipa with simcoe, amarillo and columbus hops. Unfortunately the beer was flawed as the brewer explained that the fermentation temperature had soared to 30C which massively strained the witbier yeast used. This resulted in a solvent like bitterness which completely dominated the beer.

Next was a stout that everyone agreed was a cracking beer, however it was difficult to determine what type of stout it was if entered to a competition. Wasn't quite dry or roasty enough for BJCP categories 15B or 15C, and the body was maybe too thin for category 13C. Good aromas from the black and brown malts used.

Good craic all round even though it was a small meeting due to the time of year with people on holidays etc. Nice beers behind the bar with pints of Carrig Poachers Pale Ale going down well along with good quality live trad music played towards the end of the evening. Roll on next month  O0
