Title: Narrow fermenter
Post by: SOS_OPA on December 05, 2012, 11:36:50 PM
Hi all,
I wonder does anyone have any recs for a v narrow fermenter? I have a small fridge that I want to use for temp control but it won't take either the Coopers or the Youngs 25lt. It did take one that I was given from an attic clearout but I chucked it, fearing infection. I think it was an old (70s / 80s) Youngs wine fermenter - the kind that would take a 4 inch cap, probably around 20lt.

There's a 19lt plastic carboy in one of the online suppliers - I wonder would that work? Any other suggestions gratefully received!

what @ getting some of the 20 litre drums from woodies ?
you could drill the caps and put airlocks on them ?

one of the guys bought some for no chill - might be able to give you the dimensions - I remember seeing 10 and 20 litre ones in there a while back kinda rectangular drums, could be worth dropping in - I also recently saw similar ones in mc guires garden centre - woodstown waterford - so they are probably common enough in those kinda places = hdpe with a 2 in the recycle triangle stamp

Just measured a 20L cornie: 635 mm high (without any form of  air-lock)

Woodies 25L Container 425mm High x 240 x 270mm (without airlock)

These should fit into even the smallest fridge. And after all as you are in a fridge do you really need an airlock? Just slacken off the screw cap so it doesn't go spherical

They sound ideal! What do Woodies sell them for? As in, what section of the shop are they in? Are they like camping water containers or sth like that?

Spotted this in homebrew west the last time I was in,
http://www.homebrewwest.ie/bb-fermenter-275-litres-with-capbung-2265-p.asp
Not sure of the height but it's defenitely narrower than the buckets.

Yeah I spotted them on the website, but was worried by the fact that they're bigger (in terms of volume) than the buckets, so thought maybe the photo was deceptive and there's no dimensions provided.

Just seen you've 25ltr buckets, I can't comment on those, thought the standard was 30-33ltr. I'm sure they'll send you dimensions if you enquire.

haven't a clue what section their in  - it was a few months ago when I spotted them - they weren't that dear if I recall  the 20 litre may have been @ 20 quid ?
I do remember one of them had a tap on it though

They are sold for water storage for camping/caravans etc

Which section - good question Every woodies seems to have its own layout!!

I'd ask someone

What are the Internal dimensions of the fridge?
Someone somewhere may trip over a bucket that fits...

http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_156786_langId_-1_categoryId_212483 these might be an option. Not sure of the specs but they could be worth looking at.

These worked out at 35 euro for two shipped from amazon. The amazon ones are the same make but without a tap on the cap. Googling the make suggests they are HDPE.

The plan is to insulate it, throw on a fermwrap. Add a temp probe and pop it in the back of my serving fridge.
