Title: Power regulator for heat stick
Post by: Dr Jacoby on April 07, 2018, 08:35:49 AM
I'm looking to connect a power regulator to my heat stick to allow me to control the intensity of my boils. I've been looking at the following bits and pieces from Auber:

https://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=53&products_id=444

http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_30&products_id=9

https://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_48&products_id=244

My problem is, I'm not sure how to wire everything up. Anyone have any experience with something like this?

How about these from AliExpress

a premade box (http://s.aliexpress.com/ErYv2iuq)

or

a cheaper DIY version (http://s.aliexpress.com/N7NBZRnu)

I have two of those dimmer regulators wired in to sockets in the shed. I use them to control the power to two heating elements in my kettle. I put them in originally before I read this - http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/equipment-chemicals/control-your-boil/msg32537/#msg32537

That thread discusses how the regulators actually work by shutting down the current on the negative part of the cycle and so will limit heating elements to 50% power. Recommendation was to use SSR instead as they give you the ability to control the boil better.

Thanks lads, very helpful. Think I'll go with the ssr option.
