I have a similar one ordered from dealextreme (http://dx.com/). I don't have much confidence for its accuracy but I will test it either way against my other thermometers.
I like the idea of not having to clean thermometers constantly. :)
Hey tube can youi describe that stainless steel one for me so i can look on ebay m8? ;D I want one of these thermometers anyway for in the kitchen,if they were cheap enough i might get two ;D
What about those ones where you have a probe on the end of a wire and a digital box readout on other end. Could you put probe into FV and just leave it there while fermenting, i am thinking via the rubber bung for a seal? That way you get a constant readout of brew temp :-/

Or you could avoid infection altogether and just spend €1.96 and buy the one that sticks on the side of your FV giving very accurate temps of your brew as was fecking suggested to you already on your original order ;)

I agree with Tube re: IR thermometers- They arent that accurate. I use one for checking the surface temp on t-shirt prints on their exit from the conveyor dryer (im a screen printer). I dont need a huge deal of accuracy with it so its fine for that.
On my last brew (my first ever AG brew) I used a probe thermometer from a multimeter. Turns out it was a whole 12[ch730]c out & I mashed too hot & spoiled the whole batch. So I picked up 4 cheap glass thermometers from HBW & a probe thermometer from Tommy Varden Catering supplies. Ive not tested the probe yet for accuracy but they can be calibrated.
Is there an ice bath test or something that you do for that?
Ciderhead i have one of those coming in the order anyway but like tube i don't think they are a long term item. I would not have much faith in them past a few months tbh, they are just not too robust. i am only asking for longer term purposes.
I would like to be able to leave a thermometer probe in the brew while its fermenting and have a digital readout outside all without risk of cross contamination, thats all :'(

I got one of those and it worked for a while but doesn't change colour at all now. What are other people's experiences of these?
I have one on every one of my 10 fermenters 4 carboys and boiler, the boiler one as you would expect is rough but still reading but on my fermenters as good as the day I bought them, and I have 3 other digital thermometers, one is professional for work(€250) and my experience with thermometers on eBay is that when temps get above 70 they go right out by as much as 10 degrees.

A small amount of water with a load of ice cubes and probe sloshing around will get you to zero.
Rolling boil in a kettle for other end.
