Title: Possible cheap Fv ???
Post by: Greg2013 on January 02, 2013, 01:56:21 PM
Could these still water containers be used for a FV ? I have six of them unopened at the moment. I can get these caps from homebrew.ie and i reckon they might fit :-??

Ya but would i not need to put in an airlock tube? How would that work with the tinfoil?

You can ferment in pretty much anything.
Bigger vessels give more uniform homogeneous results.
I'd go for the drilling a cap and getting a small bung and bubbler.
As product ferments you get C02 given off and that forms a sterile blanket kept in by tinfoil, sterilised with starsan spay is better.
Check out brew geeks how to make a starter on you tube and you will see tinfoil and beer production on small scale!

I was just wondering because i have them on hand and rather than dumping them i thought they might be handy for doing batches of say mead and fruit wines etc in smaller quantities. I am dying to  try some mead tbh i love the stuff ;D

They are fine for primary fermentation of the 2 to 3 week time frame but as the plastic is likely to be oxygen permeable they wouldn't be suitable for longer term storage as would be the case with wines and especially mead.

If you want to make mead, just use some of the 1 gallon demijohns where you can leave the mead to age for years without having to worry about it.

One thing i can garauntee is that mead will NOT be stored for years here :o ;D But ya i get what you are saying about long term, i was just thinking of using them for primary fermentation of brews while i am doing my first few brews before i invest in any further equipment like glass demijohns or carboys. Its more of a question of would they do in a pinch if i got a brain fart to do something outta the blue and everything else was full? ;D

The only problem I've had with using bottles like that is the ridges.
Yeast tends to settle on them and makes a mess when bottling/transferring.

Yep me lud i had thought of that allright but like i said its more for SHTF situations where you need or want to brew something that you had not planned and all your PFV's are full >:(

sure just chance it with 1 as a trial -say when ur doin ur first kit brew -fling some into one and use a little bit of teh yeast - if you dont like the way it turms out don't use them again, what have you lost ? a couple of litres ?

if you are doin that you could experiemnt with different sugars or whatever you have to check differences

Actually newtobrew thats not a bad idea, when i have my FV topped up to 23 litres with cold water i could draw out 4 litres with a steri jug and fill one of these. Then tip most of yeast into big fv but use some for this and also use say unrefined on one and the brew enhancer on the main one ;D
