Title: Mikkeller Beer Club Subscription
Post by: padraic_ on August 10, 2018, 10:06:33 PM
Mikkeller Beer Club - August 2018.

So I've been subscribing to the Mikkeller Beer Mail box for a few months now (and there's a thread over here (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/chit-chat/mikkeller-beer-mail-subscription/) about it). I enjoy it but after watching a couple of promo videos for the Beer Club I thought I would give it a go.

There's more of a cross over with the Beer Mail than I would have thought - with 3 beers appearing in both. Most of the Mikkeller beers are from San Diego rather than De Proef in Belgium.

Like with Beer Mail the 'free' glass for subscribers was delayed until September , here's what it will look like though:

So, what about the cost?
So the beer club costs 500 DKK (plus 130 DKK shipping) so that's about €84 and beer mail costs 350DKK (shipping included), about €47. Is the difference in subscriptions worth the massive price difference?

Well the main difference in what you get is that, this month at least, you get three beers from Mikkeller San Diego and one from 'The Veil'. I wondered about how much more expensive those beers would be individually from the Mikkeller webshop and well, the San Diego stuff isn't available there. It is up on a US Mikkeller site (shop.mikkellersd.com) though and averages $5.50 a can. I've drank craft in the States but my memory is hazy and it wasn't on the West Coast so I have no real idea of where that sits on the average price range.

I also couldn't find 'Green Ferrari' anywhere on sale in Europe (but I might have missed it - let me know if that's the case).  I guess  this means is that what you're paying for is the chance to get to drink these otherwise unavailable beers. Which, all being over 4 on untappd are pretty highly rated - for whatever that's worth to you. Is that worth it cash wise? I'm not 100% sure, but I think I'll keep the subscription going for a few months to see.

If any of this has tempted you to subscribe you can get 50% off your first order by using a referral code. This will bring the price down from about €84 to about €50, and if you do use it I'll get the same discount. My code is http://mikkelleraps.refr.cc/padraics.

Mikkeller Beer Mail - September 2018.

Here's September's selection. A couple of guest beers this month, all of which are highly rated. Add this to some Mikkeller classics like Beer Geek Vanilla shake and it's a good looking month. There are four beers rated 89% or above on Ratebeer, and the other five aren't reviewsed in enough numbers to get a rating either because they're limited edition or quite new. The Mikkeller glass should also arrive so that's a nice bonus.

What's coming up in October?

some leaks from the various Mikkeller social media accounts:

1. another beer from 'the Veil' brewing company. Their 'Green Ferrari' was in August's mailing and was great.
2. A 375ml bottle of a 28 month aged blended beer from Mikkeller Baghaven - this is Mikkeller's wild ale venture, where wild yeast and bacteria work away in 12 large oak foeders and over 50 Chardonnay barrels. Here's a preview of the bottle label:

Mikkeller Beer Club- October 2018.

Here's October's selection. I like the Mikkeller stouts I've had so far so I'm looking forward to this.
It's billed as "possibly the best box in the history of Beer Club" which is a big claim and makes me optimistic about what it will be like. What could make it better than other editions of the Beer Club or Beer Mail? Well, the average abv is fairly high at 8.9% so I guess you're getting some bang for your buck there. Ratings are harder to measure the box by since a lot of the contents don't have enough reviews yet for the sites to rank them. That said two of the beers are at 99% on RateBeer and five get over 4 on Untappd which is certainly promising.
Two of the guest beers - 'Dissect Me' from The Veil and 'Swimming Giants' from Burnt Mill & Finback were and canned in September so are really fresh.

2. Mikkeller Baghaven: Beer Club Blend #1
6.5% Sour Ale. Bottle 375ml.
Description: Baghaven is Mikkeller's sour and wild beer production facility and it seems like it's just kicking into gear now. Looking at the page on Untappd they have just 20 beers listed and they all date from this year.
This is described as "A blend of 33% turbid mashed spontaneously fermented ale and 67% foeder aged wild ale". The oldest componetn is over 2 years and it's been in the bottle about 10 months.
Next up they'll make a Honey Saison for the Beer Club - so expect that in a year of so...

Interesting viewing - Frank's at MBCCT (Mikkeller beer club celebration Tokyo) in Japan and interviews people involved with brewing some of the beers, including Mikkel. Everyone looks like they're enjoying the festival, even if they're tired, emotional or just the worse for wear. Turns out Lervig is where Mikkeller brew most of their dark beers ...

More previews from Social Media - it looks like Sour Cellars (https://www.sourcellars.com/index.htm), an all sour brewery from California, are brewing a beer for the Beer Club. Will presumably be a while before it's getting sent out.

They get pretty good reviews on untappd (https://untappd.com/Sour_Cellars) and ratebeer (https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/sour-cellars/30134/).

Mikkeller Beer Club - November 2018.

Here's November's selection. Lots of stouts, lots of coffee. No harm with the weather and darkness closing in. A great selection of beer with some real gems.

This month sees the inclusion of a  free mug. If you're an Irish tea drinker like most readers here will be then you'll find the size unsatisfying. It's the size of a novelty or gift mug rather than something you'd warm both hands around. At a family funeral it's the mug at the back of the press you'd give that cousin who's always been a bollix. Poor auld Beer Club they probably tried their best. God love them, sure they're hopeless innocent Danes who don't know any better.

Not having any stouts or porters or anything dark at all seems counter intuitive to me to be honest but there are some heavy hitting beers in here including 3 from the Alchemist - each of which get rated at 100 on Ratebeer. Throw in another two beers which score 95 and 96 and it's a good looking month.

Here's the preview video Mikkeller put out, this is one of the more fun videos we've seen recently. It's filmed with Umut, a bad motherfucker who runs a couple of Danish restaurants, including Guldkroen where this video is filmed. Umet's refreshingly unfamiliar with Mikkeller's beers - at one stage he says that he could never afford to buy ten of them. Anyway this is worth the watch:

Mikkeller Beer Club - January 2019

Here's January's selection. Ten beers this month so that's one more than I am used to. Lots of the Oregon Fruit Series bringing a new twist to IIPAs and the Spontan beers.

There are two different coffee raspberry Berliner Weisses -one at 3.7% and one at 8% so they'll be great to compare. Not a lot of different porters - just one in fact, but it's packed in a 750ml bottle which helps to make up for things.

1. Mikkeller: Chipolte Porter
6.6% Porter. Bottle 750ml.
Description: Spicy stout with chilli and vanilla.
Untappd: 3.71   https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-chipotle-porter/451064
Ratebeer: 98 Though Ratebeer says that this is the same beer as 'Texas Ranger' which is disputed on Untappd. I haven't had TR so can't comment.

2. Mikkeller: Oregon Fruit Series: Spontanblueberry
7.7% Lambic. Bottle 375ml.
Description:  Funky lambic, this Oregon Fruit version rates slightly above the 'normal' one on Untappd but doesn't have enough reviews on RateBeer to get a rating.
Untappd: 3.99    https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-oregon-fruit-series-spontan-blueberry/2973404

Do you find the beer mail club worth the monthly fee?

I am a fan of Mikkeller but it does seem pretty steep for approx 8 beers. I also am not really a fan of these 'dealers choice' style beer bundles. Having looked at what you have received some months, I'd be pretty disappointed upon opening the box.
Title: Re: Mikkeller Beer Club Subscription

Sorry I haven't replied till now.

Honestly I'm happy with what I'm getting for what I'm paying. I'd knock it on the head otherwise. There could be more of a range of styles but I think the standard is good and I'm getting to drink beers and styles that I won't find in my local offie, or even my not so local beer specialist offie.

I also subscribed to the Brewdog monthly box for a few months and it just cycles through the same beers after a while which is disappointing.

I will say that I don't really pay full whack, the referral codes mean I get a 50% discount (discount doesn't apply to shipping) which definitely sweetens the deal.

That is a quare discount. But depends on persuading someone else to give it a try.

Stumbled across a decent online beer supplier last week. BeerWulf. Based in Holland but postage is only £5 to NI (or free if you order a full 16 bottle case). Not sure how much postage would be to the free state though. Can't imagine it would be that much different.

But they did have some interesting stuff. I find that a lot of these online stockists just have the same stuff available (and the same stuff that's currently unavailable).

Mikkeller Beer Club - February 2019.

Here's February's selection. One of these beers is 83 on RateBeer, the rest go from 91 to 100. Plenty of sours this month, including a Baghaven beer. Just 8 brews instead of the more typical 9 but not a bad showing all things considered. Oh, and we got a 'free' 330ml glass which is quite nice too!

1. Mikkeller Spontancherry Frederiksdal
7.2% Lambic. Bottle 375ml.
Description: Mikkeller's annual lambic, brewed with sour cherries from the Frederiksdal estate and aged in Oak barrels. This year's beer was brewed with the fruit from 2018's sunny Summer and the bottle got an upgrade too, with a cork and cage replacing the usual cap.
Was also in the Beer Mail this month.

2. Mikkeller Bean Geek: Hazy IPA
4.9% IPA. Bottle 330ml.
Description: A hoppy citrusy IPA. the write up talks about a bitter choclate finish but I didn't get much of it. Maybe a choclaty dryness? Sessionable, maybe a little bland. Also in the Beer Mail for February.

Mikkeller Beer Club - March 2019.

Here's March's selection. Only seven beers this month after some sort of mix-up. Heavy on the sours, which I've mixed feelings about, I mean I like them and look forward to a couple each month but I'd prefer a bit more variety to be honest. Sure I'll just space them out I guess.
The IPA and imperial stout also look great. There was also a small bar of Bean Geeks choclate in this month's box.

That was the Beer Mail - I also post about that over here (https://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/chit-chat/mikkeller-beer-mail-subscription/) but haven't done it for March yet. I think that was probably a better deal though tbh. That NEIPA was better than I expected too.

Beer Club April 2019

An unusual selection this month. Four of the beers also appeared in the much cheaper Beer Mail subscription but Mikkeller claim that the retail value of this box is 1060 DKK (about €134), which is almost double the 555 DKK claimed value for the Beer Mail.
What makes up the difference? The SpontanpentadrupelBlueberry 750ml bottle I guess. Last month there was one missing beer - a 'spontandoubleblueberry' and this month they've made up for it by including the 'pentadrupel' version. I haven't been able to find a retail price for this but I'm interested to find one.
Moving on from cost and the similarity to this month's Beer Mail and there's a decent variety of beers and styles. I haven't had a Warpigs brew before so I looked forward to that. Beer Geek varieties are always welcome too.
The box came with a 'free' glass and lanyard - this will get you into a 'Beer Club lounge' at MBCC [Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen, May 10th 2019] this year if you are heading along. I won't be going so am happy to give this to someone who is.

1. SpontanpentadrupelBlueberry
9.6% fruited lambic. 750 ml bottle.
Description: Fermented for 8 months with 2.5kg of blueberries on each litre of Mikkellers' usual base beer. Allegedly the most  whihc for the reputed prcice of the box makes sense.

2. Mikkeller & Gaffel: Viking Kölsch
4.9% Kolsch. Bottle, 330ml.
Promo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4D3exJ11fM
Description: The collaboration that brought the free glass this month. Kolsch lager flavoured with hop extracts.  Funny that it gets 66 on Ratebeer but a solid 97 for style.

3. Mikkeller / The booth: (Taedonggang Pale Ale)

8. SportCola - Thisted Haencock
It's a cola, called Sport Cola. Not bad for what it is, a bit of a cult / lesser known Danish cola. I had mine as part of a hangover recovery and it was grand.

Mikkeller Beer Mail - May 2019.

Here's May's selection. It's MBCC month so you could expect a can of that, there's also a barley wine, some strong porters/ stours and a mix of IPAs and ales. Some months the boxes can be a bit one note so I appreciate a bit of variety.
A whopping five of the nine beers this month also appear in the cheaper Beer Mail, which is the most I've ever seen. I wonder if we're still paying for last month's Spontanpentadrupleblueberry?

Some previews of future boxes included in the video below, with beers incoming from Methode Goat / Bokkereyder (https://untappd.com/Bokkereyder) and Hill Farmstead (https://untappd.com/HillFarmsteadBrewery)

Mikkeller Beer Club - July 2019.

Here's July's selection. Heavy on IPAs and heavy stouts. I like the look of things though it's maybe a funny time of year for the Imperial stouts to be coming out. Hey, maybe everyone's getting tired of hazy IPA's? Who knows...

Also an upcoming brew from Dominion City Brewing Company: https://www.dominioncity.ca/collections/coming-soon-1/products/northern-nobility-dipa

"Northern Nobility is a DIPA made from where we live. It's brewed with local floor-malted barley and wheat, Cascade and Centennial hops from a family-owned farm on the shores of the Ottawa River, and a yeast culture propagated here in Ontario."

This NEIPA from Danish brewery Ølsnedkeren  also looks like it's going to be included. I don't read Danish but I think that says it was canned on July 19th.

Beer Club October 2019, Timm's Kitchen edition

Here's October's selection. Lots of beers not showing up on the rating sites, either because they're new or relaunched. A couple of light lagers this month, matched up with a heavy Imperial Stout, a classic Mikkeller Berlinner Weisse and a range of TIPAs in different hop intensities.

1. Donzoko:  Northern Helles
4.2% type. Can 500ml.
Description: unfiltered but not very hazy take on the classic German lager.
Untappd: 3.64   https://untappd.com/b/donzoko-brewing-company-northern-helles/2326253
Ratebeer: 51   https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/donzoko-northern-helles/563123/

2. Mikkeller: Hallo ich bein raspberry double
4.4% Berlinner Weisse. Bottle 375ml.
Description: Double strength of raspberries in this MIkkeller staple. I always enjoy it.
Untappd: n/a
Ratebeer: n/a   https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/mikkeller-hallo-ich-bin-double/776784/

3.  Mikkeller: 0 IBU
12.1% Tipa. Can 500ml
Description: Sweet, no bitterness TIPA. Made with no bittering hops - just with whirlpool and dryhopping. A malty boozy fresh tasting beer.
Untappd: 3.29   https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-0-ibu/3407830
Ratebeer:    https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/mikkeller-0-ibu/765650/

4.  Mikkeller: 1000 IBU
12.1 % TIPA. Can 500ml
Description: An update on Mikkeller's previous version. So I've read that you can't taste much over 100 IBUs in a beer, and that you can't physically dissolve much more than 100 IBUs worth of iso-alphic acids in a beer. So the 1000 IBUs include a lot of 'theoretical' IBUs, and a lot of it comes from hop extracts. This beer is obviously hoppier than the 0 IBUs version, and has a lot of maltiness and alcohol sweetness.
Untappd: 3.55   https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-1000-ibu-triple-ipa/3410573
Ratebeer: n/a   https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/mikkeller-1-000-ibu-12-1/769770/

5.  Mikkeller: 3000 ibu
15.5% TIPA. Can 500ml
Description: Sweeter than the 1000 IBU this is hopped exclusively with hop extracts. Very boozy, very bitter and sweet.
Untappd: 3.59   https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-3000-ibu/3407831
Ratebeer: n/a    https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/mikkeller-3000-ibu/768866/

6.  Wine Geek sparkling Riesling
% Sparking Reisling. Can 500ml
Description: Oaky sparkling Reisling grown from Mikkel's own vinyard. Doesn't he have a grand life?
This doesn't appear on any of the beer rating websites. Had a quick look at Vivino.com and it doesn't appear there either but his earlier wines average 4 out of 5.

7. Mikkeller/ Timm Vladimirs Bryghus - Boat Love
5% Gose. Can 500ml.
Description: Dry hopped Gose with a hint of coriander.
Untappd: 3.46   https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-boatlove/3459746

8.  Mikkeller SD / Mikkeller NYC: Gold grillz, all frillz
8% type. Can 440ml.
Description: Golden Belgian ale with Reisling and pear puree.
