Title: Franciscan Well Cask & Winter Ale Festival
Post by: admin on December 16, 2012, 05:32:37 PM
Who's going?

Just got my pass for Feb 16th :)

Handy as the closing date for the NHC Homebrew Competition is the 15th and the Well is a Drop Point, so we'll be able to bring all the entries back up with us.

BTW, for anyone looking for cheap, clean and fairly quiet lodgings, the Travelodge is currently showing at €35 a room for the night. Stayed there last year.

I hope to be there too.
As I live so far out on the sticks, I might be joining you in the Travelodge!

You could always try bru hostel on MacCurtain St.
I stayed there the night off the office Xmas drinkies for EUR19.
Basic, but clean.
Also, it's between the Well and the train station, and dangerously close to the Abbott's Ale house...

There was an IT rumour that:

You checked a lowcost airline fare in Ireland and got a price.

When you had checked the price of the National Carrier you went back to the LCA

If it recognised your IP address from a few hours before it bumped the prices as ye' were now likely to book.

We just used to use other computers/routers/networks when we were travelling with the LCA

After much deliberation and 350 for a new dress, I have now been give a visa for the week-end of the 16th.
Radison is either Little Island or up at airport, so I will have to slum it in the Gresham. Which btw is only 59 for a single or double.
Tube let me know if you and Dempse want a lift on Sat Morn.
Is this a ticket event with stupid beer tokens? didn't think so ;)

Seeing as I'm in Cork, will I organise this for bods?
Also, is this for Friday, Saturday, or both?

If i sleep in a dorm I'm the only one who sleeps. people don't appreciate the quality of my snoring.
But I might end up in the well alright.

I can confirm both Paddys beer talk and the attractive young girls stories to be true  ;)

I also spent time supping White Gypsy Amber at the bar in Bru while waiting for a bus after last years cask festival. The part-owner there (a kiwi I think, he insisted I have a bottle of Macs Gold on the house) was the brewer in Kinsale brewery. Seemed like a friendly place - he has a luggage shelf that people just came in and left their bags on to be minded FOC. Nice touch so near the 2 stations  8-)

Road testing Sheilas on Friday 18th.
What interest is there in hosteling for the Cask Ale Festival?
Group booking? reserve a room/beds? Rooms sleep 4/6/8.
Do we need a list for Fri and Sat?

My accommodation situation will have changed by then, so I'm not putting myself down just yet, but can do the legwork.

Not sure if people saw the post on Beoir in relation to vouchers for Beoir members on the Friday, but I've asked Shane and something similar will be open to NHC members. As we don't have membership cards yet, I suggest that anyone wearing a NHC hoody or tshirt should be eligible.

I have a Tee for both.
Get a pint, disappear for 30 secs, pull one Tee over the other, then return and ask for a pint.

Guys, Gobus.ie travel to cork now (not sure if ye are aware) but it's non stop from busáras to the bus station in cork, takes 2 hours and 45 mins for €20 return.

Just a cheaper alternative than the train in the same amount of time = MORE BEER MONEY  :)

You have to buy your ticket online though.

Coors now own the brewery side of things, but not the pub so I don't think they would have much to do with the festivals.

Can you lot post up what time you're going to be in town on Sat?
I have to Pick up a bag of grain anyway, so dragging a few bodies into Town is not a problem.
If the times are reasonably close, I can park up at the Well, abstain and salivate for a while then maybe do another run.
I'm getting auld, need to pace myself!

I am all about being the early bird like a kid on christmas morning, spot of priming lunch in the English market, bit of light banter with locals without an interpreter, but can't get that lazy fecker tube out of his virtuous couch early on sat morning so will be leaving Dub at 11 and will be two or three as we booze our way down the m9

But not exactly sure what our immediate movements will be after that. So don't worry about us.

Just got back from Cork. What an evening!
Only disappointed that by the time I got there they already run out of Trouble IPA and two new beers from Metalman.

Had a chance to try following:

FW Jameson Stout
FW Purgatory PA
FW Alpha Dawg
FW Rebel Red
O'Haras Leann Follain
Metalman PA
White Gypsy Emerald PA

all except WG were reeeeeaaaalllllyyyy good!
Huge difference between those on tap and on cask.

Also the pizza with goat cheese and chorizo from wood fired pizza oven was exceptional, and just for 10e!!!

Anyway ... here are few pictures that I took that night :)

I have to admit of 20 beers on offer I tried 16 :o and unfortunately there were some complete duffers which I didn't finish and confirmed to me just how tricky it can be to serve good beer in casks, for me the FW Purgatory was the best of the evening.
