Title: Thermometer's
Post by: Damo on January 21, 2013, 09:16:03 PM
Hi

I've been have some trouble with my thermometer's lately.

Ive 3 of 'em all reading different temps

I did an extract yesterday!

1. Kitcken Craft showing 110 at a good rolling boil
2. Eddington 'Meat and poultery' showing 96 at rolling boil
3. Digitech showing 84 at rolling boil

Needless to say digitech went into bin.
Turns out my Kitchencraft had moved in its housing which resulted in the false high.  I was able to move it back to where it was suppose to be.

I measured steeping water with the KC, which means I Steeped at 58 instead of 68 :(

Is there a reliable Thermometer to be had? Can anyone recommend one at a reasonable price.

What do others use?

Thanks

Damian

I'd imagine this is the same for everyone.

Thats some difference, 4 degrees and same manufacturer. One must be a monday morning job :)

John, Is it the glass one for €16.25 your getting?
Any chance of picking one up for me  :P

Calibration of a thermometer

Find a known point.
Full a glass / jar with cracked ice water.
This will rest at 0c
Place thermometer is jar and record temperature.
Make this your 0c
This is a standard check for probe and thermometer calibration.

That's only for mercury thermometers. No worky on alcohol thermometers.

Probably why I don't use them

I'd consider an stc at least you can calibrate it :)

2 stcs which get calibrated by a pal of mine who sells heater bands and has temp ref probe which as part of his job needs to be sent off for calibration very 6 months.
Digital thermometer with k type thermocouple which has no ability to be calibrated but I know is accurate up to 100
