Title: Priming issue
Post by: Thomo on April 20, 2013, 03:36:48 PM
Hi

I have a brew ready and i am looking at transfering to a keg (I have a King keg to tap). I also want to bottle a few bottle to keep for down the line. How would i bulk prime this brew as from what i understand you dont use as much sugar to prime for a keg but i still want the bottle to have some fizz. Are there any other ways to prime?

Have you used one of these calculators http://hbd.org/cgi-bin/recipator/recipator/carbonation.html.

Yeah im just not sure if i need to use the same amount as i'll be bottling 6-12 500ml bottles and kegging the rest.

I have used a king keg before and just used the same priming sugar additions as if I was bottling and it turned out well.

Ive heard that if you are naturally carbonating in the keg that you need less sugar than if you bottle. Does anyone know if thats true and if so why?  :-\

I just bulk primed as i would have for bottles. The king keg has a release valve built in so hopefully this will prevent any issues arising.

BrewSoft has a different rate for Priming Bottles or Kegs ((probabaly based on surface area) and based on the CO2 volumes you want. Most are in the 1.9 to 2.9 CO2 volume ratio. I don't have the software with me but if memory serves 5 litre King Kegs take 16 gms of priming sugar, which is a little more that is about half the bottling rate. I'll update with a table later.
