Title: VEGETARIAN HOME BREW QUERY- FINNINGS
Post by: @geterbrewed on April 28, 2013, 05:16:29 PM
We recently had a query from a vegetarian home brewer that needed finnings but didn't want to use the normal range as they are made from fish bladders. Is anyone aware of an alternative vegetarian friendly finnings?

Regards

AFAIK the meaty finings are for yeast. Your one could chill the beer, to drop the yeast out of suspension. No animals harmed, some fungi left a little cold, etc.

Sodium Silcate (oft referred to as Isinglass) is an inorganic chemical ( used as egg-preserver by your granny and also a a glue for glass ). It is the major active ingredient of Fish Based Isinglass (whick coz' its from a fishes swim bladder or nearby is a bit "fishy").

If you can buy Food Grade Sodium Silicate then it probably came from a chemical factory and not a fish so is 100% Veggie!
