Title: Pill bottles for storing washed yeast?
Post by: delzep on February 21, 2013, 10:37:53 AM
Can pill bottles be used for storing yeast? I got one today from the chemist to see if they are watertight and they are. Be handier than buying online if you were in a hurry for them. Cost 20 cent each and hold 55ml

Yeast in storage can generate some pressure.
The plastic and/or seal may not hold the pressure, but there is a way to find out..

Put some active starter in there and turn it on its cap.

White Labs yeast come in plastic vials though yeah?

My main concern is if the plastic in these bottles are food grade (although I'd imagine that they would be)

those are polysyrene with a pigment to stop uv getting in, do they shatter when crushed or deform?
eitherways small jam jars are best,  coming from the man that sells plastic for a living :o
