Title: John Bull Cider Kit
Post by: LordEoin on May 09, 2013, 09:27:56 AM
Hi folks,
Put on a John Bull cider kit about 36 hours ago and fermentation seems a bit slow.
It's sitting at 18C bubbling lightly about every 45 seconds, so at least it's doing something.
The instructions say to ferment at 18-24C, anyone know what the best temperature for this cider kit's yeast  is?
I've not made a cider kit before, so i'm probably just concerned about nothing.
Cheers :)

I'd relax.

Cider and its yeasts don't do the tango like a beer (lets get it over with in a week) they like to work slowly. Wild cider ( fresh juice and yeast) can take an age to ferment and finish and then needs a long maturation ( up to a year ).

Kit ciders are obviously different but given time I sure it will be great.

Did you get a little satchet of "apple flavour" to add at end of fermentation like you do in the Magnum kits?

If so I would just add half and then taste as they sometimes can make the cider a bit too sweet and applley. You can always add some more! but its hard to remove!

Rightio! I'm used to wines and beers with a bit more action in the bucket  ;D
It looks better today though, with a nice little head of foam.
18C seems to be doing the job nicely now.

This kit didnt come wth any apple flavoring, but i'll trust John Bull and leave it as it is :)

Thats great news. BTW: I would highly recommend the Magnum kits as well ( but beware the flavour packs) I have done both the Straight Apple and the Pear.

Also wait until the Autumn!?!

If you search this cider thread you will find that a lot of us bought fresh pressed AJ and it was fermented by some of us to great effect!

I hope we will see something similar this year.

But Autumn's like a million months away or something.
This batch was planned so that I have something for our imminent summer sun!
