Title: How to polish ss-keg?
Post by: Jacob on March 05, 2013, 12:02:12 PM
Purchased felt wheel and some polishing paste but the wheel is too soft :/
Was looking for something in b&q and woodies without any luck. Don't have an angle grinder so something that I could use with regular drill would be preferable.
Can anyone recommend something?

I Posted this on Beoir last night:

Tip 1:

Get as good a keg as possible to start with!

You will need an angle grinder (or big drill) fitted with a "Cloth" Wheel. Not the wimpy lambswool car polishing stuff)

You will need at least 3 different wheels as they will be used with 3 grades of polishing paste:

Coarse, medium and fine.

Start with the coarse, load some onto the wheel and work till your arms drop off - There that is one keg coarse polished. This is the hardest one.

Repeat for the other 2 kegs.

Arms are now getting stronger and BTW wear some ear protection as you will be deaf.

Then switch to a clean new cloth wheel and use the medium paste.

Finally use a new wheel and the fine paste

Specific grades of Stainless polishing compounds and the wheels should be available in a decent engineers suppliers or welding suppliers ( after all SS fab shops have to polish up the welds)

Phone around and see who has got some.

Once you have achieved a smooth shinny surface have a gallon of home brew. You will be knackered

You'll probably find most of the stuff you need in Halfords.
I found this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoykB77wuAo) pretty helpful, but don't use your wife's favorite bath towel...  ;D

Chadwicks in bray are having a big sale on sat 9th - its only a one day sale - a big glossy 4 page catalogue with loads of stuff came in.
One of the things was a car buffer wheel jobby for 20 euro, limited to the first 12.

I know its wrong end of the county for ya, Not sure whether that extends to other chadwicks stores, it distinctively says Bray on the top so probably not.

They also have 16"petrol lanwmower for 100.
18v hammer action drill and driver set (separate drill and driver + 2 batteries + carry case) for 75
Table saw for 150 - not sure of the dimensions it can cut though - id say its small enough.

Checked with my man in McQuillans Tools capel st,they have a powder that you apply and have 2 wheels that go on to a drill, first one works the powder and grinds off the dirt and crap, second one buff's the stainless steel.

N.B. for those guys who are employed in IT,even the ones that work as well, when I say 2 wheels that go on a drill,I do mean one at a time. :) :D

Got the whole kit for 24e. 3 wheels and 3 compounds were included. That's the kit I bought (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_764653_langId_-1_categoryId_165594).
