I've been dragging my heels on announcing the dates for the BJCP judging course for too long. I will have a full list at some point today but for now the first two dates are below. (unfortunately July 20th is the only Saturday I am free in July)
June 29th
July 20th
August 17th (provisional) (24th & 31st will not work for me)
September 28th (provisional)
October 12th (provisional)
November 23rd (provisional)
January 18th or 25th (Revision, possibly later depending on when we can get the exam date, February is the aim)
All dates marked provisional need to be run by the boss to ensure I have plans already. Unfortunately the first two three are set in stone, but do scream if the other dates don't suit, and if enough people are screaming, we can move them around a bit I'd say!
Edit's have been marked with a strikethrough.
looks great- thanks P
can't make the august one- im in states, but others look good
The October bank holiday gets in the way so October 12th works better!
That's really good to have these dates this far in advance, thanks!

No bother, I wanted to be sure that everyone could organise their holidays around the course :)
I want us to have excellent beer tasters for next years competitions!
I'll miss the August one too (back from Spain the day after)
They all look good to me for now.
I'll miss the aug one- in states- but no worries

Are you changing the october one ?? No worries if you are but do it soon - the ole calender fills up quick !

Yes October is now set as the 12th. I have updated the original post now.
Sorry lads but unfortunately August is going to have to be that weekend as I'm away the two weekends after that and I wouldn't have enough time to get prepared before that!
Sept-Nov are still open to debate, but it appears no-one has plans around then at the moment!
The 12 th October one clashes with the Ireland Game (as in - Im at it !)
Any objections to the 19th October ?

I have a wedding that day, but I'm not sure yet what the plan is. I could probably do the bank holiday weekend instead, but that might suit less people?!
I don't mind too much.
Ye may have this already but I found the BJCP App below that has all the BJCP styles and there are versions for all OS's.

Would it be possible to get the course notes for the August meet so I could study it on my own. Otherwise another idea would be if there was a number of people who couldn't make that day- we all get together on a Saturday afterwards and try and muddle our way through the course notes.

All notes will be provided to you if you don't make it along for any of the days! I will also give you a beer list and let you know where I got them!
The most important part of the course is actually tasting the beers. That said there is a bit of slog learning by rote for the online exam! But ye will be well prepared! I promise!
Is there a course outlook/timetable? It might have already been posted on the bigger thread.
For instance, the on-line exam, when is that to be done and is that part of what we are paying or extra

The online and exam are both extra above what you are paying but I am hoping to have just enough left over to at least contribute to these. I am also thinking of asking the members if they would support using club funds for the exams themselves, as having the knowledge in the club is worth the cost of our exams I'd say! (Plus if we put it to the membership we have 18 (and counting) guaranteed votes)
Unfortunately the course syllabus has not yet been nailed down to a tee, but will loosely follow the BJCP study guide: (except we'll be doubling up and doing two classes a day)

(also ignore the beer list on there as most of them are not available here!)
I will have a better outline of the plan on day one of the course! At the moment I'm focusing on day one! Longer term scheduling will fall out over the next couple of weeks!
Grand thanks
Is the online exam something we should be doing soon? Or much later?
The online exam can be done whenever, I would say later is better. But I'll explain all of that on day one!
Thanks, just wanted to make sure we did not have to do it before the first meet.
Can we put the schedule up on the calendar?
I just figured how to add it to my phone.

This got lost while I was flicking through this originally!
I think a good few people on the course are planning on attending this so we might drop July 20th and pick a new date in the future. (Unfortunately I have no other free saturday in July)
I'll post a seperate vote: http://nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,2995.0.html (http://nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,2995.0.html)

Aug 17th cast in stone? Something popped up for me, I'll see if I can reschedule it.
Yea, very little chance of that date changing!
Just updating the schedule:
June 29th
August 17th
September 28th
October 12th
November 23rd
January 18th or 25th (Revision, possibly later depending on when we can get the exam date, February is the aim)
There will be another date in October or November that needs to be confirmed.
Reminder of next date - Saturday 17th Aug - Willie J's
Looking forward to it!
I was just about to post to remind people! I'm working very slowly towards getting the beers! Very slowly! I'm a disaster!
I see that the next BJCP tasting is scheduled for 28 September. Thats the same day as the Hurling All Ireland Replay. I have a funny feeling that Kavanaghs will be very busy that day. Throw in is at 5pm (I think).
Do you think we will be able to have the tasting over and done with??
We have to... we need to be finished before 4pm
Would they be opening earlier than normal that day?
Good point ill check with kavanaghs!
I have my bus ticket bought.
john gud excuse to stay over kildare and hav a few pints wit us :) ;D
I could do that all right.
I'd say they will open at lunchtime so we could be in trouble.
If that's the case, and we need to re-schedule, bear in mind, I'm away the following week and the week after is our October meet anyway. Any chance of having it in October anyway and then reschedule the October one?
Grand, since it's so close to the October one, I vote we simply have it on that date and push backwards like we did before.

Yea that's the handiest thing to do right now. I would much prefer to get it out of the way but it makes more sense that way. We can pick up the slack later in the year. I'm just weary of us having two spare dates now that we need to allocate. But we can squeeze one into January and another into October or November!
I'll check my schedule later this evening and give ye something to vote on!
So that's the 28th definitely cancelled?

I'm just a bit concerned about how we are going to manage to squeeze in 2 missed sessions between now and January??
There always seems to be something going on........and i do have a life outside of beer stuff!! I think its a shame we have dates already planned in and many people have had to rearrange/take time off work, can we please make sure we check all sporting events for next session ;)
Just throwing it out there any one thought of an alternative venue for 28th?? :)
Lucan County? No harm to get some Dubs out of Dublin.

I could look into this, but I don't want to be changing things too often! Who else would prefer for us to stick with the 28th? I'll look and see if I can find another venue! I just don't like introducing uncertainty, that's why I decided to cancel it straight off instead of telling people it might be off.
It would suit me to get another one out of the way next week as well as I have a very busy calendar!
I appreciate that we don't have a lot of time, I can if needs be move the exam to later in February... I'll look into venues for the 28th and if I can find one in central Dublin tomorrow we can do it but otherwise I don't want to be changing the story too often.
(Johnrm, I'll sort out your losses either way! has anyone else booked cancelled buses?)

This sporting event didn't exist when I was scheduling, it's a replay, not even sure why it's on a Saturday! I'm annoyed about it too!!
At this stage it might even suit me to postpone and find another date.
We can easily push it back and then have the alternate dates somewhere else I'd needed.
I'm just one person though. Don't mind me.
Ive got every saturday for the past 3 months accounted for and the next 4-5 weeks too. So I'd much prefer if we can go ahead.
Most of my committments have been beer related :)
Myself and Kellie will be away first week Nov, , last week in November and Christmas week will be out as will first in January, My First and last week in October is also booked up with commitments.
My point is that I am very busy, with clients / work on saturdays, familial committments, and the occasional weekend away. In this regard I plan in advance. I know for a fact I will not be able to commit two more saturdays in the next few months, it will be a challenge to get one more over and above what I expected.
Originally the BJCP course was around middle of month and this is what I based on when I plan my life and kept these saturdays free. I am dissapointed another one is cancelled (especially because of a match) and before cancellation there wasnt even a sniff of talk of a new venue?
I would like to see it going ahead as planned wherever it happens. There is no problem getting a venue, why does it have to be in a pub? theres community centres everywhere. Theres venues here in Kildare and ye can jump on the green bus for a tenner return just like me, Kellie and John and others have done from Belfast, Galway and so on.
With the greatest respect I'd like to request the organisers to find a venue and then also commit to the rest of the course dates. If the course dates cant be set and stuck to I will have no choice but to consider dropping from the course, if this is the case I will request a refund.
As a teacher, trainer and qualified course producer I have never ( in 17 years of work) cancelled a session or course on a client or a corporate who I contracted with and re BJCP Im dissapointed that the course does not appear to be taken seriously.
Many people have put in huge effort on this course from Galway, Kildare, Cork, Belfast and like myself I'm sure ( whether they are saying it or not) they are dissapointed with the lack of focus on dates and the second cancellation pending.
Okay, seeing as the banter has all been about getting a new venue I've sourced one... So we're back on for Saturday 28th. I will confirm the details once I've been in there and had a chat!
Good man Podge
Can't make this

At the moment we have 2 venues, I will know for sure in a day or two, one is near to busaras,(<10 mins) the other is about 20-25 mins walk.
The start time will be known this evening, I think it might be 11 but I'll try to push for 10!
I can do couple of hours from 10.00. I just can't get plastered.
If you're starting without me, please save me some dregs. That was useful last time.
I'll be there ASAP (wherever there is).
Any news on venue? Need to plan my journey. Ta.

Temple bar is almost definite, ill confirm tomorrow. I think we'll be starting at 10:30. But all shall be revealed tomorrow!
(And by almost definite I mean I have a backup plan either way!)
So Farrington's then. ;)
Thats miles away from BusArse!
No more than kavanagh's is it?
Scratch that, it's .1km or 1min shorter than Kavanagh's.
Aye, but I knew where Kavanagh's was!
Taxis expensive, are they?
You can't miss Farrington's. Just walk down the quays on the south side, when you get to the millennium walk Bridge, that's the one after the halfpenny Bridge, you will see Fitzsimons on the left. Turn left and it's in front of you.

Weird, it was there this morning!
It's still available in other threads so must be turned off for the Beer Education forum.
So the well kept secret is not so well kept.
Or Venue is Farrington's in temple bar, starting at 10 a.m. I'll send out a pm and text later so everyone definitely gets the news!
Lads who are travelling and heard me say 10:30, I thought that was when they opened.. We'll try to save a bottle or two for those late arriving, or at least keep a bit of each beer.
I'd prefer to start at 10 as we are taking up their space, it's not like in Kavanaghs where (in theory) we are only there while they are closed!
Also I'd like ye all to make an effort to try a beer or two there after the session as a thanks for hosting, they normally have a good list and I think they have a decent selection of Oktoberfest beers at the moment!
Lastly, I will be wandering off at around 14:00 as I need to make my way to Westport. So ye might be on yer own for the last couple of beers but we'll see how we are on the day!
A massive big thanks to everyone especially Padraic and Shane(?) from Farringtons for such a fantastic day out.
Really enjoyed it.
Now the nights are drawing in must really start to "eat, breath and sleep the BJCP style guide"
Looking forward to next time

Another super day, topped off with a super result!
there was something very nice about yesterday... not sure what but was well worth the trip and giving up a whole weekend day and nearly sleeping in a doorway in dublin as there was a million people heading back to limerik on OUR green bus to kildare... lucky to get a seat home ???

Can you also let us know the provisional dates of the rest of the meets please?

yet another great day out!
Many many thanks to Padraic and the hosts for making it such an enjoyable day.
The "Master Stroke" of the day was giving us the 3 infected beers in increasing order of nastiness!
As all the tasting beers were gone I had to spend "real good money" over the bar to wash out those nasties ;) ;)
Seroiously tho' with 38 to choose from it wasn't really hard work
Here's to the comp next week, the GBS in fortnight and then the next BJCP in November (6 weeks away!!)!

Looks like I miss that date (16th) too.
Just wanted to say a big thanks to Partridge9 for leading the tasting today. Drinking Judging Weizen Eisbock (12%) at 10.30 am may not be the wisest thing to do, especially when followed by an impromptu whiskey tasting ;D Came home and slept for three hours before being given out to by SWMBO.
It's a tough life, being a trainee judge ;)
Sounded interesting, sorry I could not make it.
Well jealous! Having said that, I'd be starting fights in busaras if I'da had a whiskey at lunchtime.
Happy days, Just passed my Master Brewers Association of America exam after a feckin long slog battling through the paperwork and 'understanding' the material.
Very clever, shockingly clever, ??? how they structure these online exams, presure is intense, time short and the questions have to be really 'studied' before answering. Nothing is as stated in the manuals, you have to understand the topic to figure the answer.
Re BJCP beer tasting has really helped, thanks to Padraic for settin up the course and all the people on our course. I got 100% on the beer styles section so I obviously learned something from my reading and all the Farringtons and Kavanaghs sessions. Not quite 100% :o on the other sections though especially beer history and politics which was highly confusing and challenging.
Roll on the BJCP online exam and real test in feb :) ;) ;D Will keep studying :)
Congrats Bren
Now, when do we get our November meet for those of us who couldn't change our plans after the date change?
I can row in with Reuben as I couldn't make Saturday.
theres some who didnt do the belgians either...maybe offer both on same day- morning and afternoon?
That only works if there is beer left.
The problem with this one was that it was scheduled and set in stone and at the last minute the date was changed and a number of us had made arrangements around the original date that couldn't be moved.
Beer was held back as a result.
I'm not sure if that was the case for the Belgian one if someone simply couldn't make an agreed date. Best wait to ask the man with the beer :-\
yeah, there was beer kept for the belgians too
I'm in the same boat as Matthew there
I won't have time until after Christmas to run the German day (16/11) and the Belgian Day (12/10). The Belgian day there were 5 people missing and the German day had more people missing. If someone else wants to run either of these two days that's fine by me, but they will need to be squeezed into January if I am organising it. I might start a seperate thread for people to let me know which days they have missed!
