Hi All
I've started my long awaited brewhouse build.
For anyone interested im going to start this thread on its build/progress over the next number of weeks!!
I have a number of criteria im going to try follow during its construction:
1) Self build. (with The exception of power supply)
2) To build as cheaply as possible with out compromise on quality and functionality.
3) To not only have the ability to house a 3 keg system. but to double up as bike storage and work shop.
This brewhouse is going to be a timber frame construction sitting on low block rising walls.
I'm into my 3rd weekend of construction, its going at a slow but consistant pace. Family and life seem to be getting in my way.

Thats it so far!
I hope to get the floor drain in probably monday or tuesday eve and then pour the floor on wednes day or thursday.
At this stage im open to ideas.
I hope this project keeps you interested.
Thanks for looking.
Damo
Top notch there. Before you fill that trench, have you talked to your electrician about getting your supply in. He will need to go to your fuse board and take the power from there, full trottle like so you dont run into a power shortage in the new brewhouse. Great idea on the floor drainage. All brewers need to be able to slosh water around when cleaning and such.
Thanks Tube
Yeah that sounds like a good idea.
I'll have to think about my build plan, or lack of one!
In terms of writing it as a series, i'd have no idea how. again, let me think
one step ahead on power. Ive spoken to my sparks who has suggested we take a tee from meter box using 16sq.
(wth the use of isolators and such like)
That trench has been filed in. a new trench will have to be excavated for power supply, Im probably a few weeks away from that stage of the build.
please keep the comments and ideas comming
Thanks :)
When you say the meter box, do you mean the one outside your house that the ESB man reads. Do the ESB lads allow this. I ask because if I go ahead and build my new shed, my outside meter box is nice and accessible.
To Be honest
Im not 100% sure, I will of course seek confirmation before I proceed.
Like i said, im pretty good to tackle everything myself except electricity!!
Any sparks on-board? ;)
Tube, your probably right. I will check with sparks again.
A new trench needs to be dug, no other way around it.
Is the floor drain going to be the long box type.
yes
Its an acco type which will be modified to run into a gully riser which wil sit on the gully top in the photo
Cool thanks
I think I'll have to revisit to power supply situation
That looks great so far Damo, I wish I had that kind of space on my balcony!
Best of luck with the build!
I will be watching jealously!
What about a water supply? You would need a mains fed cold water pipe and an optional ( and a VERY WELL insulated hot water supply ) from the house would be VERY convienient. Solar suppliers now have a HW pipe surrounded by about 50 mm of PU foam in a black poly outer that would be ideal for domestic HW to the shed.
Will
Hey
Thanks Padraic, I think I'm beginning to get very excited myself. I think when you start to document things they become all of sudden very real!
Will, Water supply was the first job I tackled. If you look at the first picture you can just see a coil of half inch hydrodare against the fence. (Thats what the trench was for).
You can also see it in the last pic, I have a commercial stainless steel free standing sink sourced but, not quiet aquired yet! My younger bro is also a plumber, he reckons he can pick up an under counter water heater for pence :).
thats the plan....... ;)
Hi All
Progress so far!
The week worked out as planned. On tues after work I managed to get the floor drain installed and set to the correct level.
Today, Despite the damp drizzley morning I took a couple of hours off work to fit steel and pour concrete. I hit it with a power float this evening and I am pretty happy with the finish.

It only occured to me last night that I have a long w'end ahead of me.
On sat, I hope top get the block wall built and try collect some pressure treated 4x2 so I can get started on the timber frame walling.
Wish me luck!! :)
Any reason you have decided to build the walls using timber and not block.
QuoteWhere's the jacks going?
LOL, Dont be giving me ideas.
Hey Dempsey
I suppose this started out as a shed, and still is!
Im a lot more comfortable working with timber rather than block. I also think its going to work out cheaper in the long run.
I think this will make a lot more sense when you see it coming along.....and on...
I'm very envious, what are you gonna call her?
Good Question!
Im open to suggestions.
Dog Box II
Im goin to post pic of the box I built for d'dog.

How about - "The Dogg House"
Sierra Shack?
Ive gone weak at the knees!
I have something like this in my own plans as soon as I sort out the inside of my own house.
You can be my canary down the mine.
Agree with tube re the 10sq cable - 10sq is expensive enough as it is and it will do you for pretty much anything your domestic supply can cater for.
Damo's Doggbolt.
or The Doggbolt Inn.
Hope I dont upset you but you did put insulation board under the floor before you poured the concrete. :'(
This is fantastic. I'm pushing for permission from the OH to let me do this with the far corner of the garden.
1 Shed for the washing machine/dryer, 1 for my tools and 1 for my beer. Does that make me sound unreasonable? :'(

you mention washing machine and your beer hobby together, how exciting for her :-?. (a few missing comma's ,,,,). Try a different approach :)

Easy there noreen, I was being sarcastic with the last line.
Never thought about the planning permission. That might prove difficult :(
Latest update!
I somehow managed to get myself organised for this w'end.
Collected blocks on friday on way home from work, got up early enough to get down to aughrim to collect timber.
So, Blockwork Started.
Blockwork finished!
Rough day for it today!
Sure was!!
I was able to get the two long side walls cut out and assembled.
Hopefully, I be able to get the gables done and everything sheeted out in OSB board tomorrow
I think the weather is to be a little kinder
Had a pretty good day to day!
cut and assembled gable walls
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0219.jpg)
Cut osb board to size and fitted to stud work
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0225.jpg)
I had to get help from my brother to lift walls into place.
The last panel was sheeted after we lifted it in, They were just to heavy to manage safely.
It was dark by the time I finished so I couldnt take any more photos!
Next W'ends work:
1 wrap with membrane and batton out for cladding
2 Install ridge beam and rafters
3 fit marine grade ply to roof and membrane. :)
Jeez Damo I would have swore you were older than that, I've even more respect when I see the tools you're using to put this together!
Keep the pictures coming, looking gooood Damo.
LOL
You know Ive been told I could pass as 4 on a good day ;)
As for the tools, You cant go wrong with manny's crew helping out.
Looks the business Damo - i like a bit of the old amateur carpentry (cos im too stingy to pay a pro) - Its nice to see the pics as it develops, gives me food for thought.
HI all
Latest update!
Again, I was up early in order to get down to Aughrim to collect the remainder of my order.
I'm prety happy with progress so far.
Here's where I finished up last week
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0260.jpg)
And from today.
Wrap and battons on
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0261.jpg)
And finally, Fitted ridge beam in prep for rafters and roof in the morning.

Just a quick one re: power supply, I built a shed out my back 5/6 yrs ago and ran all the power off the kitcken sockets so as to save the hassle of running cables from the fuse board through the house. The shed is 30ft x 15ft and I have 8 sets of double sockets and 12 downlighters all running off the same supply with no problems or faults - just another option!

Ok, BUT: Just hope that them indoors use the microwave and a kettle at the same time you switch on the boiler. You will trip a breaker.
Whilst safe ( thanks to modern wiring codes ) it might just be a tad annoying. For the extra expense a dedicated circuit is well worth it.
Will
TBH been doing this way for years using both supplies at the same time and never had a breaker trip or seen too much a diff in bills.
As will said,I concur :). That's a big shed,9 metres x 4.5 metres. What you got in there. :-X
I think I'd also agree.
Anyway, I already have my fuse board with various trips and switches.
Today was a bit of a wash out, only managed to get the rafters cut and fitted.
Im away next w'end so it'll probably be slow enough over the next forthnight :(
I see you have the anti cat burglar devices fitted to your garden wall already :)
yep
unfortunatly, an ugly necessity these days!
I notice that you have no windows. any reason why.
QuoteI see you have the anti cat burglar devices fitted to your garden wall already :)
Cats are very clever these days and throw carpet over those :(

Organised cats only. Other cats are strung out on catnip and don't know what day of the week it is. :o
Carpet thrown over the wall has potential to destroy a brew. Would be a cat-astrophe ;)

Those spikes have been there for nearly 4 years and no cats managed to scale them.
upto, 2 weeks ago the front wall had nothing! that was, untill we had a day time smash and grab.
The alarm rings my no when it goes off. It rang me at 11.36am, I was working locally and was home by 11.45.
No sign of anyone, just a broken window and muddy footprints goin upstairs
The funny thing is that nothing was taken!
My Laptop on kitchen table, DH mountain bike worth 2k sittin in hall, other bits and pieces lying around. ipad, cameras and such.
The brewhouse has no windows for a good reason
That's pure class,I am cracking up laughing here, wife thinks I am going to try it out on our cat. ;D ;D
QuoteDH mountain bike worth 2k sittin in hall
Good to see another biker on here, not raced DH in a few years now but still riding a few times a week!
Whats your local track?
Hey spud
Im not as active as i should be!
I do ride cloone wood (not sure on spelling) regularly enough along with 3 rock for short spins.
I suppose im more of a fair weather dh'er, Was over in Morzine in august (go every year) and im off down to fairymount farm at the w'end for a blast, uplifts all day for 25euro! cant go wrong
Talking to a few lads who had been to Fairymount, they had a ball and got in a huge amount of riding.
Sold the DH'er myself last year and ride a 6" all mountain rig now in an attempt to keep the belly in check ::)
QuoteTalking to a few lads who had been to Fairymount, they had a ball and got in a huge amount of riding.
I just tuned into this post to see how it was going and I thought it best to start at the end and work backwards. I got quite a shock when I read this. For a moment, I wondered what kind of brew house/shed was being built out in Fairymount.
Happens sometimes,a thread wanders off topic, bit like how a chat in the pub tends to meander through different subjects. :)
Hmmm. Does sound a bit dodge!
Lads goin to fairymount, gettin hugh amount of ridin in
Nevermind, back on track.
After a pi55 poor attempt over the w'end on the roof, I left work early on monday and got the roof sheeted out.
It looks like a proper shed now
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0266.jpg)
Now I have a roof I've been out all evening cutting and fitting collar ties to the rafters.
Its comming together nicely now
QuoteLooking good. Still reckon you should have put in an en-suite bedroom.
What about a "JakUzi"?? As you mentioned "ner' do wells":
This a small compact space with a toilet and at least one famous Israeli 9mm SMG plus loads of ammo!!
(Ok: Wills been watching too may gun programs on Discovery channel)
Will
Hi All
And were back!
OK, so its been slow over the last two weeks.
I was able to get the roofing felt on last week, and on friday i got stuck into the fascia and soffit.
Yesterday was spent cutting and fitting the cladding
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20DAMIAN-LAPTOP/IMG_0271.jpg)
and finally today! didn't get a lot done.
I still have a lot to do....
Make door? not a clue just yet
Fit cladding to back and other side
Build low splinter walls.
And thats just the outside!!!
Wow thats starting to look really smart are you sure you are not a chipie?
Thanks John
Defo sure!
Tho Ive been known to put up a few fences and Ive built a number of decks over the years.
Hi Again
So I'm moving on as fast as I can....
My Sparks called over tonight to first fix. This is where I might need some advice.
As you can see from the photo, I've allowed for 3 seperate 20amp spurred connections for each element of the HLT and Boiler. Ive also allowed for one 2 gang socket below for pumps and stuff. I also have two 2 gang sockets above my work bench and another two setts on the gable end for fermentation fridges etc.
Im fitting insulation into the top half or wire free section of the stud as I go.
I'm goin to dig the trench for power supply on sat and hopefully my sparks will fit the fuse board and make final connections on sunday.
Is there anything I've missed at this stage or can anyone suggest any improvments?
Hi Damo
I dont know if u have any windows in the shed or not. I would imagine some natural light would be nice. Also what kind of ventilation if any do you have? I would imagine that once you start heating water and boiling wort your going to have lots of humid air. Depending on how well tbe shed is insulated this could cause problems with condensation and longer term mold.
Have you also considered some source of heat for the shed?
Decla
I'd suggest a serious sized extractor over the boiler and the HLT otherwise all sorts of drips will be dripping off the roof all over your sanitissed surfaces.
Also re. the electrics: Keep the photos as to where the cables run as the sparks has been a bit off good practice when routing the cable bundles.
They either should be in the roof and run vertically down to switches/sockets, or in the floor and run V. up to same.
Horizontal and diagonal runs are not recommended.
Will
Declan,
I don't have any windows, less eyes looking in the better.
Im planning on building an "electric brewery" type vent system. I just need to source some sort on in-line vortice fan
Will,
I'm gutted! I was only concerned about the fact that he drilled his holes all over the place. I took over on the drill for the rest of the holes.
The sparks is a mate of mine and hes not charging me so I couldnt stand there and give out. He was kind of looking at me funny and thinking this is only a shed! ::)
I did mark the studs with a permanant marker and I had planned on fixing small metal plates over the lines to prevent drilling or screwing through.
Thanks
The biggest thing I found out is you never have enough sockets. Whatever number you think you need, double it. They're cheap anyway.
Hi all
I know I have'nt updated this thread in a good while!
I suppose the month of December was manic with every w'end taken up with something or another. I dont think I finished any one specific job!
Untill now....
I dont know where to start.
Here goes:
I made progress with the outside, I was able to complete most of the cladding, fit the guttering and finish connecting to the drains.
The door built and fitted
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0355_zps0dace30d.jpg)
The Inside:
I finished fitting all of the insulation and moved onto the plaster board
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0341_zpsa13e95ef.jpg)
My sparks came back to finish the 2nd fix electrics
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0347_zps59a27bae.jpg)
I was then able to finish out the plasterboard and finally dry fit my work bench
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0357_zps548b1499.jpg)
And, finally today I had a go at taping and jointing.
(did'nt enjoy this!!)
Thats it for now...
Next job is to fit the V-sheeting to the ceiling.
QuoteLooking good. Still reckon you should have put in an en-suite bedroom.
No need. He's got a drain in the floor. ;D
edit: I thought you said en-suite bathroom.
Damo will it be finished for the startup of Bray Brewers ;)

Now theres a thought!
I dont really know when this monster is gonna get finished.
I'm on stand-by at the min,
Wifey getting ready to give birth any min now!!
I also have a list as long as my arm of jobs to do at home
Super job! :-)
brillant job, got me thinking and the planning starts tomorrow for a bigger Blueshed in the back garden.
Hi All
and, Im done!!! ;D
Well almost.
The outside is once and for all finished. Ive spent the last couple of w'ends and some evenings doing the last few jobs.
- fitted the granite cladding
- finished the timber cladding down to meet top of granite
- cut out bed and replanted
- re-fitted the loose paving slabs
- concreted up front edge
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0452_zpsc4290d78.jpg)
The front
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0450_zps6d1091be.jpg)
The inside is very nearly complete :)
The only jobs left are just cosmetic.
I want to tile the exposed blockwork and fit an edge under the plaster board.
The floor needs to be painted(already have paint).
The ceiling needs another 2 coats of varnish, this will be done saturday and monday evenings.
The ceiling v-sheeted out and sealed with 1 coat of varnish
(http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s396/DamianFahy/Brewhouse%20build/IMG_0451_zps5c4f6eb1.jpg)
I suppose thats it for now :)
Beatiful job there Damo!
Where are you located as I think a launch ceremony would be in order!

Lol, I think that was decided a long time ago :)
Thanks will, I'm very proud of it myself. Best of all, I think I fullfilled all my criteria from the start.
After this w'end I'm going to step back and not think shed for a week or two. Then the hard work begins
THE BREWERY BUILD :-?
I'd love to be finished for the inaugeral Wicklow Brewers brewday
If you build it they will come ;)
So glad you live in wicklow and not Dublin
Shed envy
When I do you promised to be one if my workers, digging trenches, preparing drainage, pouring foundations, raising foundation walls, pouring flooring cement and floating to a smooth finish, laying blocks to raise the walls, fitting the timber trusses for the roof, roofing the shed/brewhouse,hanging the door, wiring the shed/brewhouse to take 3 phase, plumbing the shed/brewhouse. Finally finish off the interior and exterior to a professional finish. While I make the coffee :D
Dempsey,
When you put it like that its sounds easy :)
I do like your method tho!
Get someone else to do it ;)
I got the grand tour last night, when I was collecting the new tubing (top quality tubing BTW).
I want one! The brew shed and the Brew Kit. Super Job fellow Damo!
And thanks again for organizing the tubing!!
Any pics of the brew house?
Don't show em Damo you'll be robbed!
Ive seen all those. I meant the actual brew equipment. No worries if he doesnt want to posy because of theft or whatever.
HI Hop Bomb
The only reason I've not posted pics is because I'm not really finished ::)
I'm probably about 95% there
Jobs left to do:
Fit pump (waiting on ebay, gone into dispute!)
Install stc controller (waiting on new thermowell)
Fit decals to sight tubes and calibrate.
Every time I go in there I have to prop myself against something as I go very light headed and weak at the knees ;D
Looking forward to seeing the finished pics.
It's where the RIS is stored so something like that
