Title: Cheap Wine kit
Post by: Damofto on June 28, 2013, 12:25:35 PM
I picked up a cheap 6 bottle wine kit in Tesco a while ago, it was reduced down to 3.50 from 13/14 euro so I said I would give it a go.  It's a Youngs I think and it called for an addition of 400/500 grams dextrose.

It has fermeted down perfectly to below 1 and I've already added the stabiliser and finings.  The only thing is that it tastes and smells cidery.

I know I have to leave it condition for another 6/7 days before bottling, but is this something that will dissipate over time, the first beer kit that I ever did the same thing happened but I think that was down to temp control?

Hopefully it'll settle down with time  :)

Thanks,  I was just wondering if anybody had experienced similar.  Sure I can only wait and see, it's clearing down nicely anyway.

Grand, well it says to leave it bottled for at least a month so I guess it can change a lot in that space of time.

Forget what literature says on most kits, some are ready for turn around in very short times and won't improve, most wines however get good around the 12 month mark. Wine and mead brewing are a game of patience, if you want faster turnarounds then brew beer.

Well the cider taste disappeared as soon as it cleared down.  Tasting pretty good already, should be very nice in a couple of months time.
