I can't modify the post but I'll ask one of the mods to do it.

Actually, both beers are by Young Dunkel :-[ He has a couple of friends who have tasted his beer and would like to come along to try others next week. They're not on the forum, and haven't started brewing yet, but are interested. Would they be welcome?

Very good chance that I will miss this. My schedule for the week is still up in the air, so hopefully will still be in.
Was hoping to attend this as the South Dublin brewers meet was cancelled last week. However doing a grain collection run tomorrow evening so will have to give it a miss.

An IPA I brewed with RichieH carbonated quicker than anticipated (thanks to a cheap chest freezer I picked up) so I'll bring along a few bottles. Unfortunately, my Lager has taken a turn for the worst since I transferred it to my serving fridge. I think the cold lagering temp held whatever is ruining the beer in check. At the higher temp in the serving fridge the off-flavour has become noticeable. Worth tasting all the same to see if we can figure out the problem.

It might be a good plan to bring 1.5 litres of your finest if you can spare it!
Looks like well have about 20 heads along tomorrow!
Can I assume that people with no beers beside their name are mooching or are ye bringing beer? Trying to get a running order together.

You know me I remain calm, the warm weather has made it impossible for me to brew! I might get a couple of brews on next month, to replenish my stocks a bit, I also have about 20L of Tog brew which I hope will be okay after the last few weeks!

Wrapping a wet towel round the FV has worked grand for me. Was up at 22c on Saturday but I've got it at a steady 18c now. I've been rewetting/replacing the towel twice a day and been throwing a few ice cubes into it as well. Works a treat.

Thank you Samael - just to prove to the missus that I wasn't out with some young one. ;D
I'm doing the write up at the moment and I'm going though the notes I took for everyone's beers. I tried to get the opinions of everyone sitting around me rather than my own but I still worry that perhaps that sometimes the process is a bit harsh, especially if people around me are giving negative feed back. Personally I want the cold harsh truth but maybe a few years ago when I was starting I would have been more sensitive to this type of criticism.
Its a bit uncomfortable taking the notes too as I can see some of the newer attendees looking at me taking the notes as if I'm some sort of authority on the quality of their beer (I'm not!). I regard myself as being a bit like a secretary, taking "the minutes" and don't see my opinion as being more/less important than anyone else at the table.
Just wondering what people think about with and whether you would like to see it continue or just leave it out as I don't want it to cause the meets (or myself) to appear pretentious/intimidating to attendees.
It's a difficult balance. I saw your notes from the night and they did contain some pretty harsh feedback on some of the beers. As you say, that's not because you or any individual thought the beers were terrible. It's because 3 or 4 people said 3 or 4 different things about each beer and some of these things were negative. If you record all the comments it can seem like a beer was badly received. But I bet no one agrees with each and every negative comment. I don't think it's constructive to merely list all the comments because that might give the impression that they form some sort of coherent opinion when really they're pretty random assessments.
I think it's the job of the writer (that's you ;)) to put a fair shape on all that stuff. I felt one half of the table was being very negative about each beer, concentrating mainly on the flaws and not celebrating the strengths. The other half of the table was being much more constructive, I'm not sure their comments were recorded as much. None of this is your fault Shane. There were so many of us that we really should have had an extra note taker.
I'd recommend using the notes as a basis for spinning your own story of the night. There is no perfect way to do this. I think we all appreciate the effort that goes into these write ups. You won't get lynched :)
Quote from: Dr Jacoby on August 02, 2013, 12:20:55 PM
You won't get lynched :)
I don't know, it depends on what he writes about my beer.....
As peter says, it's really not something to worry too much about, I think maybe your own opinions and not to focus too much on the individual feedback given, as that's more important to the individual brewer on the night!
Yeah I was looking at all the negative feedback this morning and I have a good bit of it written already so I hope that I have got the balance right with mainly positive comments followed by usually one suggested improvement that can be made.
Perhaps as the note taker I should have kept moving around the table during the night and that would have got me talking to different brewers to get a broader range of opinions? (I probably should have been doing that anyway!)

This was when I was telling Dunkel of how Cara was scared of a little Moray Eel. :P
Would someone be able to have a proof-read of my draft in wordpress for the tasting.
Apologies in advance, you will see what I mean. :D
I tried but for some reason I can't select the draft to open it
Hmm, I don't know what would be causing that.

He might not have the rights to open other people's posts, I think only admin can?
One of the reasons I'm bringing my beer to a tasting session is to get the critical feedback.
I've made a few brews, and the only people to taste it so far are family members. My wife hates most of it, there's two she liked. Most of the feedback is positive though, but I'm suspicious that it may be slightly biased ;)
If I'm going to ever make "good" beers and do so consistently, then I'm depending on the honest & critical feedback from impartial and experienced people. If my beer is sh%^e then I really need to know, so that I don't make the same mistakes again.
I had considered proposing a critique night, like that beer club in London, where you are literally not allowed to say anything positive about the beer. You are only allowed to point out perceived flaws and the less flaws that are identified, the better the beer.
A less aggressive approach might be to make all the beers anonymous, take everyone's comments and reveal who brewed what at the end of the night.
What I might do the next time is hand out little slips of paper to all the tasters and get everyone to write down a few comments which I can put together in a write-up later in the week. It seems fairer than me taking the notes and comments of those sitting nearest to me.
Does any of that sound useful vonHolt?
Personally I don't like saying anything negative about a persons beer unless I know what the problem is and how to fix it.
I havent been in attendance yet but I know that Im a fan of criticism because no beer is perfect. However constructive criticism is what I want, and also pointing out the strong points before commenting on the negative keeps it all civil and less intimidating for people to come along. Pointing out a weakness in the beer, but more importantly how to improve it would benefit everyone.
That sounds like a great idea, plus it will reduce the amount of work you have to do and also hopefully we'll get a lot more comments, if everyone participates.
Yeah I think the comments will be a lot more honest if its anonymous and to add to what Joey is pointing out, it might be worth having a rule that you cant give a negative comment unless you can propose a method of addressing the flaw/issue you have found?
Lads, any volunteers to do a write-up on this? I know someone usually takes notes at the CB meets?
Someone usually does a write up too ;)
Its so big that it doesn't look like a write up, just an essay!
That was some turnout alright. I have faith in you Shiny. I'm sure it'll be excellent as always... :D
You could get DrJ to "ghost-write" it for you..? ;)
Joke was lost there...Its already up and awaiting proof reading!!

Ahh... I missed that eh.. joke... :)
I'll get a read of that and schedule it for tomorrow. Cheers lads.
wow! that article was a heroic effort! Scheduled for tomorrow morning.
As I said, apologies! ;D
I don't think you need to be apologising to your readers for the length of the article, it's excellent. Must have taken you ages. I like that snazzy slideshow thingy.
It took me 3 evenings to write, then I lost 30% of it due to some error on wordpress. I only recovered from that initial rage recently to finish it off! Dunkel the elder encouraged me to finish it. :)
I did not know! :(
Edit, where do I find these? I'm looking around in the post and don't see them...
Cool thanks, see them now.

Thank you both! Great write up and pics!
Nice work Shane! Taking all the previous posts into account I feel kinda guilty about the fact that I sat beside you all night, but thankfully you only put my positive comments into the mix... I think...
Can't wait until the next one...
Aha don't worry about it, I wasn't really referring to anyone in particular and I was probably more of a culprit than anyone to be honest.
I've been told that the tastings come across as being overly serious and BJCP-esque to some and that its not the same level of craic as other tastings... so I'm trying to find the right balance where people get useful feedback on their beers but at the same time enjoy the night.
Being one of your first tastings with capital brewers, what did you think yourself and did you see anything that could be improved?
Just to add my two cents, i felt that the tasting comments have been too harsh at a meeting i was at (and i was mooching)
I actually like some feedback good or negative but i felt people were searching for a negative rather than positives which would destroy certain peoples motivation to brew (which i hope is not what we want)
I think the super level of criticism should be left for judging commercial beers but if a home brewer asks then the truth should be told just that maybe positives should come first.
Eg great roastiness off your beer but if it was carbonated a little more it would be better etc
Also the beer was flowing very slow, i dont know about others but i can taste a beer in a few minutes i dont need half an hour for two mouthfulls.
