Title: Water quality reports
Post by: Jonnycheech on July 17, 2013, 06:29:27 PM
Hi all,

just wondering if anyone has had any luck in the past in getting water quality reports from the local councils? If so were they detailed in that they gave ppms of the mineral composition?

I'm only starting AG but I have read that Dublin has quite a high level of carbonate in the water, which is not great for PH levels when mashing pale malts. Good for the black stuff though!

I tried recently for Dungarvan?Waterford and they were two years out of date and gave little to no indication of various mineral composition.

There is no one representative water profile for Dublin. The city is fed from various sources and these are often blended along the way. Some parts get very soft water, others get hard. I think Tube posted a map of the water districts somewhere on the forum before. Maybe take a look for that?

Get it tested here (http://www.murphyhomebrew.com/laboratory-services/water-analysis/prod_104.html), its pretty good value IMO.

Wow, that's awesome shiny, thanks for that!

I have emailed the council and they forwarded my email to the lab. Hopefully I'll get something from them. I emailed the EPA but they weren't that helpful, they just directed me towards the council. There is some information on the council and EPA sites but not in the detail required.

If I have no luck with the lab I'll be sending a sample to the UK, well worth €20.

Thanks again.

I reckon these guys, T.E. Labs in Tullow may test samples. I've emailed them to find out. Could be cheaper than sending to the U.K.

That would be fantastic!

I ended up giving TE Labs in Tullow a call. They do a chemical analysis of water for ridiculous €150!! They can tailor the test to test only for what substances one wants but I don't think it would be cheap.

Irish water reports are typically 100-150, I get them done once a year as I am on a well, I believe some of them are subcontracted to Trinity for 75 and they make a margin on top of that.
