I wanted to ease myself into extract brewing so I put on a 5L batch last night. I also wanted to take advantage of the cold weather and do a lager. Here's the recipe:
Steeped overnight at about 19°C, in 2.5L:
150g Extra Low Crystal (Caramalt)
150g Carapils
Strain off the grains, top up water to 6L and start boil:
200g Spraymalt Extra Light @ 60min
8g Hallertauer Mittelfruh @ 60min
300g Spraymalt Extra Light @ 10min
100g Dextrose @ 10min
5g Hallertauer Mittelfruh @ 10min
I lost a bit of water to the boil so I had to add 1L of cold water to bring me up to 5L.
OG = 1.052
Pitched dry yeast (Saflager W-34/70 Dry Lager Yeast) @ 16°C
I read on the Fermentis website that the temperature should be 12° to 15° for this yeast so I've got a heat belt and an STC-1000 which I have set to 12.1°C. Could I go lower with the temperature to take advantage of the cold weather or will I just leave it as it is?
it should be fine the way it is
