Who is thinking of brewing for this?
September meet is scheduled for 10th September but I would suggest a comp meet held towards the end of September say about the 24th>
?
We will need to have available 4 bottles - 2 for our selection and then 2 to go foreward to the grand final.
1. Will_D: At least 1 entry
Sounds good to me.
1. Will_D: At least 1 entry
2. Brenmurph at least 1 entry ( Thats if foreigners are allowed in to N. county ;D)
I plan on brewing for this. I had one attempt a few weeks ago but it was a failure. Beer's fine, but it attenuated to 1006 which pushed the gravity over the 4% :(

What about CO-OP BREW DAY to brew some beer for that competition??!!
Ahh cool Ill jump in with Liffey..
so each club does a club comp den a battle of the clubs sorta thing??
OK. So I'm in the middle of a late night brew! Determined to get this one spot on for the comp. Mash was nice and high and preboil was 1035ish... I'm in it to win it!
APA with some flaked rye (why not). Bittering with Columbus and finishing with a heap of Cascade and Summit. Half an hour into the boil and I'm keeping it ticking over nice and gently. Don't need this one reducing down to 1045 or anything.
I'll brew something for this for definite, at least one.
I have something in secondary now that should just squeeze it under the 4% mark, 3.93% according to software. It should be ok for September.
so when does this beer have to be done by?
I think we agreed to meet and judge Tuesday the 24th at the Boro
I have bottled today a Bitter at 3.9%
Fingers crossed it will be good for the 24th.
Have we given any consideration as to how we're going to do this?
Here is Shinys quote from another thread: I think we will have to do something similar. i.e. someone not entering will have to decant beer in the back bar maybe.
It will probably be somewhere in between and isn't finalised but will probably be along the following lines... We are going to get someone who isn't entering on the night to give each of the beers a number in the fridge where they are stored, only they will know what number corresponds to which beer and who owns it. As each beer is served, they will be very gently decanted into a pitcher first to ensure that the bottles can't be identified and that no one is left with dregs of yeast either.
We will hand out a couple of score sheets to everyone there, which should be enough for all the entries. Once the flight is done the numbers will go into an excel document which will take an average score for each entrant. The top beers will be selected to go though to the next round.
In terms of entry form, the steward on the night will only need two things from entrants, name and ABV. We will talk about recipes/styles/thoughts after the initial tasting which should only take two hours max. The main thing I want to avoid is people going "Oh this is XXXXX's beer so it must be good/bad etc.." which would skew the results.
Yes A great idea.
As ours comp night is only 1 week away time to get rolling.
We need to know who is entering and who is not but willing to steward
Also as we are just turning up with the beers its up to ourselves to make sure the beer is at the correct temperature. Coolbox or loads of bubble wrap may be the answer.

Have just downloaded the Capital Brewers score sheet - will customise it for us
Can we have a volunteer who does not have a beer to enter do the numbering and pouring?
They would be able to taste but not score.
Also lads, even if you are not entering, you could put your name on the list as an attendee if you're coming anyway? That way we'll know how many bottles to bring.
I'll have a couple of bottles of (hopefully) carbonated RIS from the barrel to taste after the judging.
do we want these in any particular type of bottle?

Err: A beer bottle(full) would be good ;)
Seriously though probably need just 1 500 ml bottle ( maybe 2 ) but you also need a bottle or 2 more if you are selected regional winner and your beers goes into the final

We will maybe decant the beer from bottles into glasses or a jug before presenting it to the group, so type of bottle is not really important.
Unfortunately won't be around for the comp next week. :(
Had the beers ready to go and all. Heading off on hols tomorrow morning and forgot to leave the beers with one of you gents. Anyway, will save a bottle and bring to next meet.
Just five of us? No one else?

@Will: Do we need any score sheets? Should I print some?
Please if you could I am really pushed today trying to finish the press. The pressure is that the apples are not getting any younger ( picked for 2 weeks now ) and I need toi get them pressed.
Have just PM 4 of our regulars ( Nc, Cb, P9, Cr ) about this.
Just in case please bring paper and pens as well.
Ok, will print them then. Which version would we prefer? That one with 'check boxes' or with space for some notes?
What about the generic one here:
http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,3948.0.html
It has space for 7 beers and so would only need 1 sheet per person attending!
Maybe a few spares?
Was thinking about official BJCP ones but generic will do the trick as well.
Going to print 10 of those, should be enough for tonight :)
How do last night go? Was there a winner?
couldn't make it last night. raging i missed out on the ris again. how did it go ?
Will do the write-up in morning! Today was all about cider (from 10 am till 8 pm)
Will's article just published lads. Sounds like a good night.

Good night alright, and a great standard as usual.
I have a couple of suggestions for future comps.
We should have a laptop on hand to collate the scores (as capital brewers did I think). Would make things more transparent and speed up the additions.
Also in order to maintain impartiality, the person who's beer is being judged, their score should not be included in the total.
Likewise the brewer should not be allowed to give a 1,2,3 preference to their own beer in the event of a tie break.
This would all be done by the steward.
Lets face it, most of us recognise the beer we brew when we taste it, so it can never be considered blind/impartial tasting unless the brewers own score is disregarded.
I don't think this would have made much difference to the result on Wednesday, but it would make things more fair.
Thoughts?
Sorry lads but I have to resign from entering my beer into competition finals.
Run out of citra that was used to "randall" beer you had in OldB last time.
Also, dry hoped rest with Amarillo in the cornie so don't even have 'regular' version :(

So if Jacob is out whop was next in line?
As James withdrew from 3rd place as his Hefe was over the 4%, the next in line was Jacob with his "non-randelled" beer. Jacobe do you want to enter this as it was very good?
The thing is that I dry hop that beer few days ago, so technically it's a different beer now.
Sent from my engineering tricorder.

I suppose to keep things fair your beer is technically different and fresher than the other entries and might be at more of an advantage than before. Fair play for telling us but I think for consistency it would be more fair to leave you out. :'(
Ok, So have talked to jacob and he has withdrawn.
Therefore the next beer in oreder was Colins
@Colin: Do you have some to enter? If you can get it to me today I can drop it into Farringtons tomorrow
Finally! The recognition I think my beer truly deserves and I've only got one bottle left. :'(
We drank it last weekend at the co-op brew day.
It was not going to win anything anyway!
Thanks for the offer though.
