You guys need to get a hold of the "Conan" strain that Heady Topper uses. It's supposed to be a magic strain that really maximizes fruity flavors in IPAs. My theory is that it is much more active at converting hop oils into other oils than most other yeast strains. There are some crazy flavors that people are getting from IPAs made with his hop.
(Including Strawberry if you combine Conan with the SUPER rare "Belma" hop from out here in Yakima.)
-I WAANT this yeast but you can only get it from a can of Heady Topper which is one of the most sought after beers in the US right now and I can't find anyone willing to trade me for it....
:'(
Adam
48 USD for 4 cans. You'd want the yeast culture for that price!
Is it imported into here?
http://www.gigayeast.com/vermont-ipa-yeast-gy054
Nice find.
Was a tricky one to find. Doesn't say if they ship internationally but there are ways round that. Possibly a group buy?

Dean. Has anyone phoned Dean?
He'd be a candidate for canonization if he could pull this off. They can't supply their own market, let alone start exporting. Not for a couple of years anyway. I had it in New York last month. I'd pay top dollar for it anywhere. Count me in for any yeast group buys on this. Clone time.
Can't resist! I'm in if there's a group going on. For the yeast or the beer.
My pal in Torst had saved me some as he knew I was coming over. Top lad. Says it's like gold dust. They once went up to Vermont to get it as you can only really find it easily there. Distribution outside there is sporadic at best.
Any family around that area?
Lets network!!
If it can be bought in Queens, we send a few cans over to Seattle.
Then the OP ( Adam ) gets to enjoy the beer and then Cultures up the yeast.
Then he sends one decent sized vial to the NHC. This can then be spilt and cultured up by us.
Much safer than trying to post a few cans!
Simples.
Okay.
I'll look into it. We'd need to put it to plates. I hear it mutates really quickly and by generation 4 it's a shadow of itself or something.
Just had a reply from Gigayeast. I mailed them on the 16th:
"Hi Tom,
We'd love to send some yeast to Ireland but we'd need to figure a few things out. In terms of cost-- our homebrew pitches retail for between $8 and $10 US. We don't retail them directly from the lab. We sell them wholesale to homebrew stores. That being said, as you're the first irish brewer to contact us I'd be willing to give you the yeast but that still leaves the shipping. We haven't shipped outside the US yet-- although we are getting more and more requests from Europe and Australia. I can take a look at some shipping options and get a you a quote in the next few days. The other options would be to contact one of our retailers and see if they will ship or have us send it to a friend/relative here in the US that would forward the yeast to you."
I wrote them back asking about wholesale price & how many vials in a standard wholesale pack they sell to homebrew shops.
+1 HB
I'll be in Boston in about 3 weeks time, so maybe we could get some sent to the hotel, as I have often done this with mills in the past. It all depends on how bulky the pack is, and how it needs to be stored while I am over there. There is no fridge in the first hotel I am in, although it won't be too warm as the air con will be on most of the time. There is a fridge in the second hotel, but will be full of expensive booze that gets charged as soon as you remove it, so won't be able to use that either.
I'd say maybe check what their shipping to Ireland is, and stress that we are a fairly big organisation, and see what the shipping is. Alternatively, just get a couple of vials sent to my hotel, and I will post them straight back to Ireland.
Quote from: チューブ on August 20, 2013, 11:52:38 AM
Or the vials could be sent to my sis in law in NY who will post them home.
Yeah, that's probably handier.
Just had a pretty cool reply from gigayeast:
hi tom,
the smallest orders we wholesale are 25 units. if you're serious i can quote you for 25. otherwise, i'm willing to just do you a solid and get a couple pitches over there for the cost of shipping. i don't need anything in return but if you have access to any interesting artisinal brewers yeast (i.e. strains derived from traditional brewerys in the UK or Germany) we could work out a barter for your club.
I'll take one anyway. Presume we would have no problem getting to 25, and would hope the shipping wouldn't be too extreme, as they are not that bulky. To use the fellas own term he sounds pure solid!
I would take one too, haven't made a decent IPA in a while.
I'd be interested if this is a runner. I'd imagine 25 should be a doddle.
I'll start a list! ;)

What exactly are we buying 25 of? Vials? If he's willing to send some over as a "solid" we could just make a load of slants out of it.

Personally I would like to get a vial myself, rather than to wait for it to be stepped up and split out. He seems sound, so would be nice to give him some business, as he mightn't get a whole lot more after the initial purchase.

Yeah I was excited about the whole barter thing but if people want to pay for vials plus shipping then I can get a quote. We're still 16 short for the 25 pack. It could be quicker to do barter & make slants than fill this group buy :D
It's only been a few hours and we have 9 already, do shouldn't take too long to get 25.

The only yeast Ive talked to them about was this one & the wholesale price is for a pack of 25. Maybe see how we get on filling this & if we fall short I can ask him if they'd split packs to make up the order of 25.

Some information to chew on regarding the parenthood of this yeast,
Quote
A few brave souls, including yours truly, allege that Conan is derived from the pitching yeast that Ballantine used at the large malting and brewing operation in Newark, New Jersery. All of Ballantine's ales were brewed at this complex. Ballantine had a smaller brewery in Newark where it produced "Ballantine Beer." Both of the Ballantine strains are held in the NRRL culture collection. Here are the NRRL ascension numbers and data for the two known Ballantine strains:
Y-7407 Saccharomyces cerevisiae Meyen ex E. C. Hansen (1883)
G.W. Lange, Ballantine, New Jersey BR, Beer pitching yeast
Y-7408 Saccharomyces cerevisiae Meyen ex E. C. Hansen (1883)
G.W. Lange, Ballantine, Newark, New Jersey BR, Ale pitching yeast
There is growing evidence that points to Y-7407 being the parent of the Chico strain. Sierra Nevada obtained their pitching yeast (BRY 96) from the Siebel Institute of Technology. BRY 96 is from a brewery formerly operating on the East Coast brewery. There was only one major ale brewery on the East Coast; namely, Ballantine. It all makes sense because Chico ferments clean enough to produce a psuedo-American light lager. Chico is known to throw sulfur. A few us believe that Conan is derived from Y-7408. In fact, the result of fermentations conducted with the Y-7408 culture that Al Buck revived from lyophilized (freeze-dried dormant) form pretty much match those of Conan.
BRY 96
This is a flocculent top fermenting ale yeast from a brewery formerly operating on the East Coast of the United States. It produces a very clean ale flavor which has been well accepted in a number of breweries.
With the above said, the good news for non-yeast geeks is that Al has made both of these strains available in liquid form. His company is called East Coast Yeast. Y-7408 is being sold as ECY10 Old Newark Ale. Y7407 is being sold as ECY12 Old Newark Beer.
ECY10 Old Newark Ale
Sourced from a now defunct east coast brewery, this pure strain was identified as their "ale pitching yeast". Good for all styles of American and English ales. Top fermenting, high flocculation with a solid sedimentation. Suggested fermentation temp: 60-68°F. Apparent Attenuation: 68-72% Resurrected from a freezed-dried deposit library, this pure strain of S. cerevisae is NOT the rumored Chico strain.
ECY12 Old Newark beer
Sourced from the same defunct east coast brewery as ECY10, this pure strain was used as their "beer pitching yeast". The strain has been identified as S. cerevisae, hence it is not a true lager strain, but should ferment at lager temperatures. Could this be the parent strain of Chico? Suggested fermentation temp: 58-68°F, Apparent Attenuation: medium

How do they work that? The time difference is ony 5-8 hours!
The old long finger Id say.
hi tom,
25 Gold Pitches comes to $131.25 US. We have no experience exporting so far but it looks like shipping will be in the range of $190.00 US. This seems pretty high for the shipping so I'm going to contact someone and make sure this is accurate.
Ive asked him to get a shipping quote from USPS as that'd be the cheapest option. Il keep ye posted.
190 to ship a small light box?
Who's the best swimmer here?
The box might not be small. 25 vials plus all the protective packaging that comes with it... 190 is too high but thats a fedex quote I bet. USPS would be at least half that Id say.
We could just take him up on his offer of some freebies & slant them.
That's a bit better. Will probably work at about 9 to 10 dollars each which is about 8 euro or so. Not bad
seeing as all our eggs will be in one basket here, it's probably a good idea to try to get some ice packs or something in there? I never bother when buying yeast, but then again I'm only risking 7 quid or whatever. Yeast dies pretty quick in this heat (and I presume it's much hotter wherever they are)
Id say they ship them with ice packs. Hop & Grape do & they arent a yeast manufacturer like these guys. Il ask though to make sure.

hi tom,
apologies for not getting back to you sooner. things have been blowing up here. using usps priority express it looks like we can get the yeast shipped in 3-5 days for about $105.00. The least expensive service is priority mail at about $79 but it takes 6-10 days for delivery and that's just too long for the yeast to be outside a refrigerator. let me know if this works and we can get something out to you next week.
3-5 days shipping for 105 USD? What say ye? That works out at 9.45 USD per person before club bank fee.
That's more or less what I guessed above. So about 8 euro per vial? Barely more expensive than buying it online from Ireland!
sounds good!
I'm on for it. I'll have to start slanting now I suppose!

All the yeast pitches are spoken for Kaz but Im certain a few people (including myself) will be slanting this to keep in the yeast bank so there will be loads to go around in a few weeks.
Thx. Really appreciate. Keep me posted when it arrives.
They already have. Being distributed early next week. :)
