Title: Which Porter?
Post by: CB_Phil on August 30, 2013, 11:02:41 AM
So Im hoping Ill get home from work in time to get a porter on the go for Christmas consumption (maybe pushing it as its looking like mid-November now) or @ least something for the new year

I fancy trying my hand @ a porter (will be my 2nd Brew), anyone got any experience w/one or know of a decent one that I can play around with? Looking for one w/a good strong flavour that I can possibly hack a bit too

Cheers,
Phil

The Coopers Stout kit is highly thought of. I did it a couple of times and personally I found it wasn't roasty enough. It needs a little something extra. Here's what I'd do if I were you.

Heat a litre of water to around 70C
Add steeping grains (200g medium crystal malt, 150g black malt) to a clean muslin bag
Steep for 30 mins and drain the grain in a colander over your pot. Rinse (sparge) your grains with some hot (not boiling) water from the kettle
Bring the grain tea to the boil and simmer for 10 mins to sanitise
Add the grain tea to the fermenter along with your Coopers kit and other fermentables using just enough hot water to dissolve everything
Brew short to 20 litres
Pitch yeast and ferment as you normally would.

If memory serves me, you'll end up with something just over 6% if you use 1kg of dried spraymalt.

I would second this. Both Coopers Stouts are pretty good. Last one I did with some Chocolate malt.

Pretty similiar to the previous post. ;D

6%, like the sound of that, was wanting to up the % too. I did a stout for my 1st one, Mutons, turned out ok but could definitely be improved upon.

Seen that wasnt sure myself. I ended up ordering Muntons Gold Dockland Porter as Ive used their Stout & foundit pretty good. Also got Barley Malt Roasted Black & Dark Spray malt to use instead of the sugar. hopefully workout
